Nog finally got his Christmas prezzie yesterday!
It’s very cool. A flip-top Nokia mobile phone (named Hamish – geddit?) to replace the five-year-old beater he’s been using. But what an ordeal to get the thing. I first saw it in November and tried to “purchase” it then – I was going to use my mobile phone bonus points to buy it. But after much faffing around the salesclerk informed me that I couldn’t use my points again until January 10th. Bummer. So on Christmas day I gave Nog a photo of his upcoming-prezzie instead, and went to pick it up last Monday. No way. There was some problem with the place that approves the point system thingy … and so finally last night we managed to get it. The sales clerk laughed when I handed the package to Nog and said “Feliz Navidad!”, and then joined in the fun, wishing Nog the best of the season. Ha.
It’s the first time Nog has had a mobile phone that did more than just, well, phone people. This one has a camera and a radio, and some other doodads that he’ll probably never use. But what the heck. The best feature on this phone is the flip-top thing, as Nog always carries his phone in his pocket (with keys, coins, etc) and so this will protect the screen better. Plus it’s rather nifty looking, doncha think? And it was fun having another Christmas.

cool! I’m sure he;ll have all sorts of fun with it – how could anyone resist a new gadget?! 🙂

Oooh, have fun with your new Star Trek thingy, Nog (I’m desperately trying to remember the name of the thing – it wasn’t a phasar, was it a transponder?)

I think they just called them “communicators.” “Kirk out.”

The phaser was the weapon thingy (“Set phasers to stun.”). Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, that’s one thing the new communicator won’t do. The rest I will have fun with.
Thanks az!

Tell me more about the radio thing. Phones with radios now. Could this be the salvation of short wave, at least for DRM?

You’ll have to ask Nog. I set it up for him but have yet to look at the instruction manual, so I’m not sure about the “extras”.
My iPhone has access to all kinds of radio stations.

You know, you just keep talking about this phone thing and we may have to upgrade from the basic Nokia. I said “May”.

I have a Nokis with a camera which IF I ever use it, forget I have anything on it for months OR if there was something I ABSOLUTELY NEED a camera for… forget Like the time the guy in front of me was driving with his feet out the window or the drunk driver/crash incident, when it would have provided evidence…
I am too cheap to use it for anything other than phone or the odd text since all that I can do at home or at the office and don’t want to spend the money on AND can’t see the screen ti be able to make much sense out of internet stuff.
I COULD use it to play music but the only time I want to do that I am either in front of my computer, in the office where I couldn’t, anyway, or in the car where I listen to the CBC (or on the rare occasion when I can hear anything but static, NPR — honestly I hear people here in Ottawa talk about listening to NPR “all the time” but the only time I can hear much of anything, it is in the middle of a rain or snow storm and I can’t get it at all at home).
BTW,
A woman has come up with an application for cell phones which blocks you from texting or phoning while driving. It works via satellite and if you are moving faster than 5 kph, it blocks your phone. As I understand it, 911 (999 in the UK) is exempt so you can dial in an emergency, as well as two other numbers in case of emergency.
Great idea but, of course, so far, it isn’t mandatory so it is up to the user and how many people who feel that they ABSOLUTELY MUST text while driving or spontaneously combust are going to willingly use it?
As well, it doesn’t differentiate between someone driving and someone who is a passenger, so if you were on a bus or a train or in someone else’s car, it would block your calls.
Still, it has promise. I am sure that someone would be able to tweak it so that it would recognize if you were in the driver or passenger seats, Once they have that figured out, they should make it mandatory for all phones.

I wouldn’t recommend going online on a normal mobile either, Mudhooks. I have a monthly internet flatrate that is quite cheap for the iPhone, and of course the screen is big enough to be able to read things easily. Plus (as I found out last summer) I can also use it as a portable modem when I’m away.
I suppose it’s good to have the option of checking something online or sending an email if you absolutely need to, but I think it would be quite expensive to use regularly.
Upgrade to what, HMH?

Well, it looks as though the phone will have to be replaced. It won’t charge since I tried to plug it in to a car charger my nephew gave me which it appears was totally the wrong type…
PS check out my blog…. sighhhh…
