Here I sit all sniffly. Have foregone my pilates class this morning because I didn’t think going out into The Rain with already wet sneakers would do my shivery self any good, nor would my head take very kindly to hanging upside down with its current plugged-yet-drippy sinus condition. So damn. I probably should have got some cheap rain boots last October. Getting two colds in one winter is pretty much unheard of around here. I blame wet feet.
Keeping my feet dry has become an ISSUE. It’s bad enough having the clothesrack almost constantly set up in the livingroom, but once shoes get soaked it’s very hard to dry them out properly when the humidity is stuck at 100%. My only other pair of wearable shoes (an old favourite pair of Campers) have cracks in the soles, which cannot be seen but which let the rain seep in quite nicely. I didn’t want to invest in a new pair of shoes this year in case it was MY LAST WINTER, and now sandal weather should be back by the end of the month. So nothing really left to do about it but complain.Β π
Rain, rain, go away …

Az – I did the exact same thing about new competition cleats my first year after dx. I figured I’d never run an agility dog again, so much better ways to spend 60 bucks (and that’s if I could find a good pair on sale.)
And I didn’t get new glasses, either. Or put in for a new desk chair at work – until my back started to bug me. Then the operations guy went room to room and *found* me an unused chair. It took all his effort and the pain of a stiff back to make me realize that in some ways deciding I wasn’t going to replace stuff that needed replacing was just making me uncomfortable in the time I *am* here.
You deserve a new pair of kicks, girl. Rain to you is like snow to me in CNY – relentless. There’s no point in being uncomfortable or trying to wait it out…a pair of Crocs could solve it all. What size are you, anyway?

Crocs??? I’d rather die! π
Yeah, I hear ya. And I think I’m pretty much over “living like I’m dying” … or at least like I’m going to die in the next five minutes. But the truth is I haven’t been able to find much work since last October so there is very little money to go around. Anything at all extra I’d rather spend on enjoying something “in the moment”. A short trip, a meal out … stuff like that.
If not for the constant RAIN my old Campers would have done just fine for one more winter. I actually have very difficult feet – triple EEEs with a very high arch/instep – so almost no shoes fit me. In desperation I did try Crocs once a few years ago – they hurt like hell and pinched in all the wrong places. Plus they are ugly as sin. So it suits me to live in a place where I can where sandals 8 months out of the year. And those sandals always have to be Mephistos.
But yeah, I know that I don’t think it’s a priority to get stuff like new sheets and towels (though mine are all very sorry looking), or new glasses and prescription sunglasses, because those are all “long term investment” purchases. But I even put off haircuts until I can’t bear it any longer. Because hey, I’d rather go out for some tapas and get new photos for my blog, or buy a dvd that will help me get through the day. And it isn’t like I’m splurging on those things. Just choosing where the little I have will bring me the most pleasure right now.
And two pairs of shoes should have been enough. If not for all this rainy rain…

I’m sorry, this doesn’t quite compute…
You are female (comme moi), and you’ve decided NOT to buy shoes? Run that one by me again?

Holy SHIT I just looked up Mephisto shoes on Zappos and those suckers are all $300 + a pair! Wow! The sandals were all over $100. Dude, your feet are expensive!

I don’t buy Mephisto shoes – they’re really ugly. But the sandals are often quite cute. They usually cost about 100-125 euros. Same with Camper shoes. They are super comfortable and they last for years.
I never scrimp on footwear. Which is why I only have two pairs of shoes. I’ve got a few pairs of sandals though, all various ages.
Here you can see a selection of my red footwear, including my sneakers, the Campers and two pairs of Mephistos.
