We had by far the meanest, most likely to inflict serious injury cat years ago. He had been a stray. Of course we had him neutered, but doing so didn’t tame his aggression. He bit, scratched, and drew blood. He attacked our ankles as if we were real prey. He once grabbed my head and dug in all his claws. The kindest, most soft hearted people were practically demanding that we put him down. I even paid for psych meds for him. For some reason, I just couldn’t get rid of him though. When we adopted our fourteen month old little (human) girl, who herself was extremely active and even more into everything than the average young toddler, I thought that we would certainly have to give up the cat. As it turns out, he never gave her a scratch. She played with him, pulled his tail, and put him through every test and he was nothing but gentle with her. I still wonder if he understood that she was a baby, or if he just suspected his days were numbered if he harmed my baby girl. His name was Fur. Unfortunately he was run over by a car right after my baby turned two.
What a wonderful story, Dori. I’ve heard similar ones of cats knowing not to hurt little ones like that. The reason I ended up with Lua was because her previous owners were about to have a baby and thought she might be dangerous to have around. But I am sure that she would have been wonderful with a baby. Ah well, worked out well for me! And I also think for Lua, because she got a whole lotta love here at casa az.
Cranky Lua…. Still missed.

Yeah, but doesn’t the look on Lua’s face say “piss off with that camera already”? 🙂

Interesting — and pretty cool, actually — that a cranky cat turned out to be a great mom! 🙂

Absolutely precious. Looks like her kittens really resembled her!

The kittens resembled both parents. Here you can see them together while they were “courting”. The father is on the sofa…
