I’ve been tagged by my friend Trucie to come up with a list of 10 things I would want to save from my home if it were suddenly engulfed in mysterious flame. This was a no-brainer for me because many years ago, when I was about 22 years old, I did actually wake up in the middle of the night with my apartment on fire. I’d been storing some boxes of my sister’s clothing & stuff out on the (wooden) porch while she was away on holiday and some fucktard decided to find out how well they would burn. And so by the time I woke up (luckily I’ve always been a light sleeper) and smelled smoke the whole porch was in flames and the porch door and windows had exploded into the front room. I was living with my musician boyfriend Ian at the time and, after making sure he was awake, I threw on a dressing gown and hustled him out the back door. You see, when it actually happens your mind doesn’t think about possessions. At least, mine didn’t.
Of course now my first thought would be to stuff the cats into the extra large carrier I bought specifically for this purpose (back when I had three cats) and get them to safety, along with me and Nog. So, that’s only four things. Though if there were enough time I’d probably grab my iPhone too. 😉
How about you? What would you save?

Bob, of course. And the dogs if they can pay attention. They’re too big to carry. I’d try and save my box of (antique) old photos and the antique photos on the walls. They are irreplaceable and the people in them are long gone except when you see flashes of them in a relative’s face.
I know this sounds cold, but I might not worry a whole lot about the cats. I like them but I can always get more cats. Also, at the first sign of any commotion, at least one of them climbs up underneath the mattress and is impossible to get out quickly. I’d burn up trying. I probably WOULD try at least a little. Maybe they could ride out on the dog’s backs. Yeah, that’d work.
I don’t know. I’d probably panic and we’d all go up in flames together.
I really hate this question.

I probably *would* burn up trying to catch Azar and get him into the cage, while Nog was safely outside with Loki in his arms …

I posted on this today. It is an interesting question, and we “rehearse” for evacuation on a regular basis, seeing as how we live in tornado alley. After you have gone through the place when the tornado watch is announced and prepared for the trip to the storm shelter, you get really good at collecting and you know what and where everything is.
But you definitely have your priorities straight, az, people and living companions are much more important than things.

Now that Muddy Wabbit has died, there’s just me in my apartment so I’m lucky in that I don’t have to worry about any living companions as part of my Ten Things I’d Save.
But its amazing how this kind of scenario focuses the mind on what’s really important.
And, if I’m honest, I’d probably just run out the door screaming and stark naked – having entirely forgotten to try to save any of the items on my list – if my flat were really on fire!

I was going to say that perhaps the more appropriate list would be “what 10 things would you miss most if everything went up in flames”? because really – unless there is plenty of time to round up belongings – most people would probably panic and just run out the door. But aside from my laptops, iPhone, iPod and camera the only things I’d really miss would be my books & films. I don’t seem to own anything with sentimental value attached to it anymore, which I am sure has something to do with having had cancer for the past two years. I mean, really, I’d miss everything because I really love my apartment and the stuff I’ve collected over the years. But when it comes down to it, it’s all just stuff. I know that, in the end, I’d just be happy to still be alive.

I’d save my cat. If possible I’d grap my laptop and mobile phone. After that, mystery!

Ten? TEN????!?
I used to ask datees “What one item would you save if your house was on fire” as that is a good question.
My own answer would be – the framed cross-stich sampler of my son (and first child)’s name and DOB, made for me by my best friend.
Sure, I couldn’t live without an iPod – but that’s replaceable.
Children and animals are a no-brainer.
