But it really had to be done. I couldn’t come to Málaga during Feria and not take part at least a little. So I wandered over to the centre of town around midday yesterday and took in the festivities. Málaga has a different way of celebrating their Feria. They do set up a big fairground, but this normally doesn’t get going until sometime after about 9.30 pm … so during the day the fair actually takes place in town. Boy, does it ever. Hoards of people were milling about, music was blasting and blaring … I took it all in for as long as I could stand to before deciding I had to get the hell out of there. And then I remembered a recently opened bar called La Reserva del Pastor that Victoria had told me about, so I headed over there hoping it wouldn’t be like many of the bars in the centre with their special “Feria menus”. And happily it wasn’t. In fact it was an oasis of calm in the madness that is Feria in Málaga. So I dragged my weary self up onto a bar stool, introduced same weary self to the owners and then was thoroughly and most pleasantly spoiled beyond belief…
I mean, okay, they knew that I know Victoria and that I was taking photos to put on teh internets, but sheesh. I was wined and dined and then wasn’t allowed to pay for most of it. So what was meant to be a quick “self defense” pit stop turned into a couple of gorgeous hours in very pretty surroundings with Belén and Luís constantly checking up on me to see if I needed or wanted anything else. Oh, and there was a biznaga seller, of course. Note that in the daytime the jasmine buds are still quite closed up … by the evening they all open up and turn into a big puff ball of heady fragrance. But I digress. After “dessert” (a complementary glass of Victoria #2) I had a pleasant stroll through the gardens on my way home and wanted nothing more than to take a long shower, put on something comfy and take a siesta. But it was not to be.
Manolo had told me his cleaning lady would be showing up sometime during the week and there she was. So I parked myself in the livingroom and got some work done while she finished up. I finally got my shower a couple of hours later, but by then it was too late for a siesta so I decided to “tough it out” until bedtime by watching DVDs and eating popcorn on the sofa, with a gentle sea breeze wafting into the room and my lovely view of the port.
But today is a real work day. Victoria will be picking me up sometime this morning and we’ll head out to the bodega. Not sure if we’ll make it to the vineyards. In any case, I’ll have my laptop and camera with me and reckon it should be quite an interesting day. Stay tuned…

nothing like being spoiled from time to time!

I know, and it was so unexpected. The reason I first started talking to Belén was because Victoria had told me this new place had tapas (the other sister bar only serves raciones), but when I sat down I saw it was basically the same menu as the other place. And no tapas. So I asked Belén if there was another menu, that I was there on my own and even half raciones were too big, and she said not to worry, I could choose anything I liked off the menu and they would prepare a tapas size for me. And this was BEFORE I mentioned Victoria, so that was really very nice of them. Then she and her husband Luís seemed curious about the camera and all that, so I fessed up …
I’d like to go back with more people and sample a couple of the raciones that looked amazing. Maybe with Nog at the weekend.

I really am! And have yet to go bathe my feet in the sea, if you can believe it. Probably won’t get a chance now until tomorrow morning. But just being able to see and hear it is wonderful.

The festival and the food all look amazing.

Nancie! I saw you pop up on Twitter yesterday and realised it was ages since I last saw you there. Looks pretty amazing where you are too! And I see that you survived the Expo in Shanghai. Now that’s something I don’t think I could do – I purposely avoided the 1992 Expo in Sevilla (was living in Salamanca at the time).

I would feel swamped, but it looks terrific.

“Swamped” pretty much sums it up. Honestly, at one point I almost thought I was going to cry. The crowds were just crazy and then I got lost trying to find the restaurant and kept going round in circles… when I finally got there I was so relieved. I feel like I should visit the fairground at night for research’s sake, but will definitely not go alone. I am not happy in crowds, that’s for sure. But I think the photos turned out well! I made these collages extra large, so if you click on them then click again you’ll be able to see more detail.

Well, sort of. Yesterday evening I just stayed in and relaxed. Today should be quite busy though. Which reminds me, I’d better get showered and dressed!

I love the idea of you toughing it out with popcorn and dvd’s while a gentle sea breeze wafts around you. That’s my kind of toughing! x

Yeah I know, it was … tough. 😉
Did you see this pic?
And how is YOUR sea breeze? Or aren’t you there yet?

Well, we should be getting a sea breeze on Friday for a week, but it’s not comparable to yours … for a start, ours will be cooler & probably wetter! We’re heading for a little cottage in Grange-over-Sands, on the edge of the Lake District. We’ve never been before but on the map it looks like a good base from which to explore the area! Glad you’re having such a good time in Malaga.

That sounds like a lovely getaway. You two never stay still, do you? I’m actually working right now – out at the bodega – and having quite a good day. But also looking forward to getting back to town (and the breeze) later on this afternoon.
With luck (ie. no sick cats) your brother should be here on Friday as well. Fingers crossed!

No sea breezes in the middle of the continent. . . you lucky duck.
I hate crowds too, probably why I don’t live in the big city any more. It all gets just a little overwhelming.

You get biznaga sellers and we get people who try and foist long-stemmed roses that are past their sell-by date and have little or no fragrance on you. I would LOVE to have some of the biznaga, right now….

Well, they don’t last very long, just the one day and night. So their sell-by date is always the day they are made. But yes, they are lovely.
