Ever since I’ve had balconies I’ve always put plastic mesh across them to keep the cats from jumping or accidently falling to their deaths. Of course this didn’t used to stop Sunny from jumping up and perching on the balcony railing (which always gave me a mild heart attack) so when I got Loki I put up even more protection to make sure he wouldn’t go over the top chasing a bird or a fly.
I left all that stuff when I moved because I have different sized balconies in the new casa az. Instead of six narrow ones I have two wider double balconies (it’s like having four, but they’re joined – as you can see here). You can also see that it would be quite a fall. But my question is… do you think I need so much protection here? I’ve put some mesh up on the sides of the balconies because there are small ledges leading off them that might be tempting to a certain orange stripey cat. But the bars are a bit closer together than at the old place and they have all that squiggly doodad stuff going on, which would make it very difficult for them to accidently fall off. I know I don’t need to put that angled stuff up again, but do you think I should extend the plastic mesh to cover the entire balcony?
My friend Flor thinks I’m not giving my cats enough credit for being intelligent enough not to leap into the unknown, but since both Lua and Sunny fell off my terrace when I first came to Sevilla – and also my vet told me that cats fall off rooftops and balconies all the time – I tend to err on the side of caution. I’m not that concerned about Azar because I think his leaping days are long over, but Loki is far too curious and also far from clever. I can imagine him going “what the…?” before plummeting to his death. Anyhow, just thinking about balcony safety at the moment. The terraza will pose a whole other set of safety issues, but that is something to think about at a later date.
I would put it up… Where they is a will, there is a way… Better safe than sorry…

I think you might feel better if you did, just in case.

Well so far Loki seems a bit nervous about going out onto the balconies. Had the doors open for a bit yesterday as it was such a warm and sunny afternoon. And Azar loves sitting in front of the open doors, but has yet to venture out.
I think I’ll look for something a bit more attractive than the plastic mesh. When I went to put up the mesh on the sides I saw a magnificent specimen of some kind of locust basking in the sun out there – at least three inches long! And just the kind of thing that might make Loki forget where he was and give chase.

I understand your concern, but those railings look about 3′ at the most? I’m not the biggest cat fan, but I do appreciate their intelligence, so if a kitteh decided it was curious enough, it would leap up there no problem. In fact, I would go as far as to say that rather than an incentive to prevent moggy from going up there, the mesh merely acts as a new frontier that has to be accomplished.

The mesh would be to discourage a hapless cat from accidently falling through the bars, which I think the squiggly doodads on these balconies actually do. It wouldn’t stop a cat from leaping up and either perching there or, well, going over the top.
Trust me, cat intelligence flies out the window (along with the cats themselves) when a bird or fly or whatever attracts their attention and then sails off…

Hm, tough call, but I’d do what gives you the most peace of mind.

Cats are more likely to leap up to get on top of the railing than to climb the mesh. The mess generally is more likely to deter them from climbing. And it will keep them from looking out between the bars. My cat will jump up to the top of the fence which is 6 feet high but only to get over the fence. I put up fine plastic mesh (designed to keep birds out of fruit bushes) to keep him from jumping up and it hasn’t stopped him at all. However, unless they have somewhere to go, they won’t be jumping up and since they can see through without being tempted to climb through the railing, they won’t need to jump up and they won’t fall through.

yes, I’d put up the mesh. If nothing else, you’ll know that you did your best to make the balconies as kitteh-proof as is reasonable given the state of the feline mind…

My vote is for the mesh too. And if I can think of any way to barrier things so that they don’t have an easy shot at the railings (my DIY handyman is in the kitchen making up your tortilla de patates recipe) I’ll kick it to you.
Cats get everywhere.

Well, haven’t had time to put up extra mesh yet, but it is such a beautiful day out there – about 22º – that I’ve opened the living room balcony doors and the cats are now out there enjoying the fresh air. Will keep a sharp eye on them!
