I really hope I don’t end up regretting this but this afternoon I decided to take Luna out of quarantine. I’ve had a couple more chats with vet Yolanda and she says this kind of situation is always fraught with “what ifs”. The only totally secure thing I could do is wait awhile and get a specialised blood test done that is only for feline leukimia, but then what would I do if Luna tested positive? When I told Yolanda I really couldn’t see myself giving her up at this point she said that Loki’s vaccination should keep him fairly well protected and that – frankly – even if Azar did contract the leukemia now he would probably end up dying of something else before it developed into anything life-threatening. And so about an hour ago I brought Luna out and let her wander around with the boys…
I’ve actually been bringing her out all week and having her sit on my lap while watching tv or working at my desk. She is very content in my lap and will happily stay there for ages, purring way. So Azar and Loki have got used to the idea that there is a gatita around. Azar is only mildly interested but Loki is completely smitten. At first Luna would do the cutest hissy-spitty-growly thing – hilariously “ferocious” in one so tiny – but she soon got used to the guys and no longer feels threatened by them. So when I brought her out this afternoon and plopped her on the chair next to Loki … nothing happened! There was a bit of sniffing and chirruping but no weirdness and nobody seemed put out. Azar even played with her a little, but mostly it’s been The Luna & Loki Show since then. Luna is clearly in charge and Loki is following her around like lovesick schoolboy. Adorable.
Anyhow, this is all a bit of a test. There seems to be no risk of scratching or biting, so even if Luna is positive there is little likelihood of her passing anything on immediately. I think for now I’ll just let her out under supervision and put her back in the “air lock” to sleep with Nog at night. Still not sure if I’m doing the right thing…

It’s the classical and flamenco world uniting, as in the Concierto de Aranjuez. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbNV9AwFFc8

Hello and welcome! I put new batteries in my scale yesterday and, as Loki was watching me, I decided to weigh him – 6.6 kilos!

It’s always hard to know what to do…M was a feral kitten, and I never had her tested (or the vet tested her and found nothing). It took me 3 years before I could pick her up, though…Luna seems a very nice little kitten and a real looker!

Luna has been affectionate from day one, so I’m lucky that way. And yes, a serious looker! She’s already an adorable kitten, but I think she’s also going to be quite a beauty when she is older.

Loki has a girl friend! Loki has a girlfriend!
I think this ought to be fine. When they’re as small as Lunita, you worry more about mites and worms than the kind of contagions that mostly crop up when they’ve been fighting and mating.
Things are not as peaceful around here yet, but promising. Torvald is trying to come on macho, but he walked away from Fergie this morning after a chase up the stairs. Just making a statement.

Loki looks positively HUGE beside Luna! Luna looks somewhat raccoon-like… cartoon raccoon.

Yeah, I’m kind of hoping she never grows into her ears. Guessing that Loki outweighs her by about 6 kilos…

Day two… I realise I am doing this all backwards, as Luna still hasn’t had her vaccinations and Loki has feline herpes (though at the moment isn’t presenting). So they are a bit of a health threat to each other. Mind you, Azar ended up catching Loki’s herpes even after being vaccinated, so…
I’m just going to go with the hope that Luna is fine. I’ll probably get her tested again when I take her in for her vaccination shots, which I know is like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped, but meanwhile I’ll only let Luna “roam free” when I’m here with them. The main thing is to keep them from sharing water and food as they don’t seem to be doing any serious fighting. And Yolanda told me that she knows of cats with the leukemia virus who have lived with other cats that didn’t end up infected. In any case, Luna is here to stay, so now we just have to deal with whatever happens next.
In terms of kitteh happiness, letting Luna out with the boys has been a real hit. Luna and Loki haven’t stopped playing and chasing each other around, and this is just what I wanted for Loki. This morning, instead of plaintively mewing for me to come and play string with him, he’s been running all around the apartment with Luna. Meanwhile Azar is comforably sitting in his favourite places without being pestered. Win-win.
Oh, and after just one week of eating a diet of Hill’s kitten food Luna is noticably filling out, most obviously in the neck and shoulders. Last week her little neck was painfully scrawny but now it’s got a bit more flesh on it and she looks less like a belly on legs with a bobble head. So hard to believe that Loki used to be that small…

Luna is a little beauty. Great that the social relations work out the way you wanted. Healthwise it’s always a lot of ifs… Good luck!
