I don’t know about you, but I almost never use my land line phone anymore. In fact, I almost gave up my land line when I moved in February. I think I’m glad I didn’t because it comes in handy more often than I thought it would. But it turned out that the two old plug-in phones I’ve had for years have been dodgy lately, and one has totally kicked the bucket. And both sets of cordless phones I had (one of my own, one inherited from Susan when she left town) are on the fritz – seems they only perform for a couple of years at best. So I ended up getting a new cordless pair this past weekend – one for upstairs and one for downstairs.
I usually get more of a kick out of buying new gadgets, but these were more of a practical necessity as my contract allows me free national calls on the landline. Still, I did find a rather nice looking set at a good price – they actually look nicer “in person” with a sort of mother-of-pearl finish. And they come with a Pachelbel’s canon ringtone option! I just hope they last for more than the usual two years before they conk out…
Dutch design… It might last you a while. I hope…

My last set was a Phillips. One phone died after about a year, the other shortly after the guarantee ran out. Susan’s were Siemens and never did work well, but they were already a couple of years old when I got them.

To be honest: I have a Siemens set and am very happy with it. Don’t use it too much.

My Panasonic cordless phone (house too small to need two!!) has lasted me for seven years now – very ergonomic design, totally reliable. The only thing I miss is a speakerphone, so I can carry on typing while on hold (insurance company, other phone company etc), without knackering my neck by tucking the phone under it. I hope you’ll be very happy with your new ones. What’s a Pachebel thingy ringtone?

It’s helpful to have a second one upstairs so that nobody breaks their neck trying to answer the phone. Also, one phone can always be kept on the base charging while the other is elsewhere in use.
You’ve never heard Pachelbel’s Canon? I get a ringtony version of this:

I have some BT phones – no problems at all for 6 + years with the phones. All I have had to do was replace the rechargeable AAA batteries a couple of times. Useful to have one non Dect phone plugged in somewhere as well in case of a power cut.

I get more and more annoyed at the “quality” of cordless phones of late. They have annoying features that one doesn’t need and stuff that you do need they don’t have. They die within a year. In the latest ones, they have an announcement that comes on if you accidentally his a button which is right where your thumb hits if you are hanging up the handset, There is a button which is supposed to find the handsets but all it does is find the one in your hand. The bases are very light and too small so if you accidentally touch the handset the wrong way, it tips and the handset falls, usually behind something.
I have a corded phone on my desk which I got for free when they were throwing away at work. It is supposed to have speakerphone but I have yet to figure out how to use that. Basically, it is a phone with buttons and a dial tone… that’s all I really need.

The cordless has three handsets. I have one in the kitchen, one in the living room and one in Mom’s bedroom.

We have just bought a replacement cordless set of three – Philips and almost identical to yours but in black – as our old ones were killed off by a power cut (not sure why!). And what influenced my choice? – massively reduced (probably last year’s design)!

My *whole apartment* is only 325 sq ft. I don’t get many calls, and I have no contract, with Virgin Mobile, on my cell. I was freaked at first when I cancelled my land line, but having an extra $25+ a month works for me. Also, AT&T was charging me $3 a month, just to have a discounted long distance rate, even it I made no calls. My VM cell has no roaming for the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. May not be as happy after an earthquake though if the cell towers go out.

The benefit of corded phones is that they still work in a powercut.
I assume you won’t be having Rob Paravonian to visit?
