Today’s Photohunt theme is “broken”.
Here you can see Azar’s broken front left paw, which is actually his lucky paw and is also why he is called “azar” (which means chance or happenstance in Spanish). When he was a tiny street kitten someone killed off all his five siblings but only managed to batter and bash his front leg, leaving it permanently bent and broken. At first I thought he was going to die of his injuries, but when he didn’t I realised I couldn’t leave him out in the street like that as he couldn’t fend for himself. And that’s how he came to live with me, which was pretty lucky. If not for the broken paw I don’t think I would have taken in a third cat at that time.
Azar will be 17 in April and is the love of my life.

that’s really a heartbreaking story of Azar and family. He’s really lucky you found him. I pray that he will live a longer and healthy life.

Back when we were living on Blackthorn there was a young black cat we used to see around the area. He liked being around people, but at a distance and he would never come up to us. Then something bad happened. I think he got in a bad fight with another animal that left him with a hole in his neck and two of his legs that he was limping badly on – one front and one back. He came to the side door of the house and meowed. He needed help and I guess he figured we were his best bet. We gave him some food, which he appreciated, but we could see his neck injury was getting infected and he was having a terrible time trying to walk.
So off we went to the vet emerg. It turned out his legs were just badly bruised and they healed up fine. The vet dressed his wound and gave him fluids and antibiotics. We tested him for any other issues and gave him his shots and Shadow has been with us ever since. Shadow is more my cat than Tuffy P’s. He follows me around everywhere and if I sit down to watch tv, he has to be right there on my lap, on his back, getting a tummy rub and a neck massage.

As terrible as his injury was, it was his lucky break (pun intended). He’s a lucky boy…

How inhumane was that person who deliberately killed and maimed cats. And how good of you to take Azar in. Am glad to learn you two have spent such a good amount of time together already.

When I look at your pictures of Azar and his crooked paw, it always reminds me that owning cats is never one sided — we get so much from them, but they need us too. Azar is a great little guy, and he’s so lucky to have you!

Like all of you have noted, yes it’s totally a two-way thing. I rescued this little black kitten all those years ago and he has enriched my life in countless ways. But mostly just by being his adorable self. I’ve never known a cat like this – he is truly special.
