Too early to say, really. At first sight, there is little difference with the old style, except it looks like you are reading your email in an poorly lit room.
I manage about a dozen different Gmail accounts, between my own personal and business ones, and those of my clients. I like Gmail because it’s a cloud thingy that can be accessed from anywhere and isn’t dependent on a website or computer based whatsit.
But man! This new set up kinda sucks. And the themes have also changed, making them all less readable. Plus some are gone now! I mean, if you’re going to do a massive change like this at least leave what was already there as it was.
I also really don’t like how the nested messages show up… again, not clear enough.
Yes, I could have waited until the change was mandatory and “happened to me”, but I prefer getting my complaints in early. 😉 Why change something that was already working just fine?? Like that awful new Twitter interface. I’m not opposed to change, but would like to see changes that make a difference for the better. The New Gmail hasn’t done this.
Change is hard.
I hated the last update, too. They are moving toward making it be part of G+ in look and feel and probably functionality. They did it to Picasa, too, which I REALLY hate but I’ll get over it and learn it and it will be fine.
This, too, shall pass. Our age makes this more difficult, I think. Maybe?
I like change, when it’s for the better. I don’t use Picasa’s photo album or G+ so I’m not aware of those latest changes.
What I don’t like is when a service is changed with no obvious benefit, themes previously used are removed or changed, and functionality becomes clumsy. Which is so far my experience with the new Gmail. Like I say, I’m maintaining about a dozen accounts, so that’s a lot of annoyance to deal with.
Pretty sure this would have annoyed me 30 years ago too…
Ah, but is the functionality clumsy or are we just used to something else? I can’t comment with any certainty on this, I started using the new layout as soon as it was offered, and …. I’m used to it.
I looked at the thumbnail and decided to stick with the tried and true until I absolutely have to. I only hope to GOD I can get a black background. White backgrounds hurt my head. I quite literally cannot see. Many of these sites don’t take the visually impaired into account. While I am not by any means legally blind, I have difficulty seeing things on a screen where it is too bright. I have to adjust colour to make whites less white and even cream colours are often too bright. I have floaters which are enhanced by bright light.
Usually, when you are allowed to change colour combinations for things like webmail. the combinations are hideous and they aren’t doing it to help you see, just to give you several more hideous options to choose from.
I decided to skip it for now. It was first offered to me today, and I was in a bit of a rush. I’ll look at it when I get back from the Irish Discworld Con. But my Google Reader has already switched over. I don’t think I like it. The “jump to next post” button has gone. I liked that button.
The search is a lot better now. It’s a drop-down, easy to use.
I will say, I don’t like being able to see through the mail to the themes. It reminds of the aero transparency which I turn off whenever I see. I have no idea why it annoys me so, it just does and has for years. There’s probably a switch for it on the email, too.
I am suddenly happy now because there is a new sandy beach theme that reminds me of being in Málaga and dipping my toes in the Mediterranean. I’m such a pushover…
I hate it. I’ve tinkered with the settings so they’re not so obnoxious, but who needs a damn header in their email? It’s just space they’ll fill with ads, you know it.
Not sure yet but it certainly takes some getting used to…

Never tried it. I use Apple’s own Mail application, which is brilliant.

I haven’t tried it. At least, I haven’t clicked the come-hither that keeps asking me to Switch To The New Look. I just got used to what I have.

I haven’t seen it yet! Mine hasn’t changed over at all yet. I can tell you I’m not stoked on the new Google Reader, though.

Mine hadn’t changed over either, but I thought I’d have a look at what was going to be forced upon me shortly. I don’t get it – it wasn’t broke.

I don’t mind the change really.

There are several dark backgrounds available so you’ll be fine.
But it’s a shame they’ve removed some of the themes I was using and quite liked.

Irish Discworld Con!!! Ha, that sounds like fun.
I don’t use Google Reader. Prefer to visit blogs “in person”.
