The winter and summer sales are the best times (and for me the only times) to get new sheets and towels. Since the arrival of The New Bed last October I’ve been using the old king-size sheets which are 1) really old and 2) way too big, so today I decided to splash out on some new ones. In the past I’ve gone for simple cotton sheets that I’d jazz up with some embroidered trim but this time these 330 thread Egyptian cotton ones caught my eye.
Now for some (sledpress) 330 may not seem like such a high thread count, but for me this is total luxury. And of course now there is no going back to the usual cheapo 180 thread sheets so before the sales end I’m going to have to get a second set of these. But hey, I’m worth it.
What’s your favourite extravagence?
Hah! I’ve found that after 450, everything else is wretched excess, and I have a couple of nice 350-count sets for my bed. For the massage victims, 220 works pretty well. Now, six-ounce flannel… that’s worth it. And so is Egyptian long staple cotton.
My Albino Ex was sleeping on those 180-count cotton/poly things when I got to, ahem, know him and I went to work immediately; I still remember him pawing a set of 600’s (which really aren’t that much silkier than 400’s) in the big box store and saying loudly enough to attract startled attention “That’s SO F-in’ NICE!” I found Rome in clay and left it in marble, as Augustus said.
After sheets, my favorite extravagance is small farm cheese…. this week.

I have NEVER slept on poly/cotton! My cheap 180 sheets were always 100% cotton, even though a bit rough around the edges.

I stand corrected. Polyester sheets would never go over in those hot summers, for starters….

Towels! BIg fluffy bath sheets. Out of the shower and using a towel that is both soft and big enough is one of life’s underrated luxuries.

A blast from my past. Hanging towels outside on the line makes them smell nice and fresh but seriously cuts down on the fluffy factor.
