My lovely Luna Lunita Chiquitita (yes, I do call her that sometimes) is in the spotlight today because this morning I finally took her in to be spayed. I’ve been planning to do this for over a year now, and Mama Sled had even sent me a donation to put towards the operation (thanks again!), so there was really no excuse. Other than for the past six months or so she seemed to go into heat about every five minutes and I had read that it’s better to wait and operate when the cat isn’t in heat.
Well, as I say, today is the day. First of all Luna had to skip breakfast, though she didn’t really make a fuss. And she only complained a little bit in the taxi on the way to the vet’s. But you can see in her eyes in this photo I took in the waiting room that she is obviously terrified. Poor little girl.
Yolanda did a quick check-up and pronounced Luna in perfect health. She weighed in at 3.2 kilos (less than half of what Loki weighs!) but she has always been a smallish cat. Anyhow, I have been assured that Luna will have just a tiny incision with dissolving internal stitches so she won’t have to wear that neck-cone thing, and that although she may be a bit groggy when I pick her up she should be her usual self again within about 24 hours. When I go back this afternoon I’ll also be bringing Morcilla with me for the second rabies jab (for her passport) and maybe a routine vaccination jab too. And Luna will also be getting a micro-chip – something else I was supposed to have done over a year ago.
Will update in a few hours once everyone is back home again. What a day!
[Update: 6 hours later…]

Here’s Luna back home again, hanging out next to the water bowl. She was wide awake and alert when I picked her up but is still a bit shaky on her feet. I tried giving her some of her normal food but she wasn’t interested at all. Then I remembered I had a tin of special cat paté left over from Loki’s last stomach upset and it just took one whiff of that before she started chowing down like crazy. So it’s a good sign that she’s eating and drinking well. As promised, the incision is very small and apparently it doesn’t matter if Luna licks it, but I have to give her antibiotics for a week. Anyhow, that’s done! It’ll be Morcilla next, though not for awhile yet.
I need some of that cat pate!!!
Pretty, pretty girl.

Today she’s gone off the paté. 😦
Will have to either find something else she wants or forcefeed her with a syringe.

Don’t worry if they go off food for a day as long as they drink water.

Well, after Luna wanting to eat everything in site when she got back from the vet’s on Tuesday evening, she then went on a 24-hour DOWNER… wouldn’t eat, hid under the sofa and basically made me feel very worried that there was something seriously wrong. And then I discovered – or re-discovered – the magic potion. Malta!
One smear of malta on Luna’s paw, which of course she *had* to lick off, being the proper and delicate girl she is, also seemed to wake up her appetite. And after that she was more than ready to pack away a good amount of the special cat paté. Magic malta also came to the rescue with giving Luna her meds. What a relief.
Today Luna looks almost back to normal, other than the bald belly. She spent most of today stretched out on my bed (something she almost never does) and also walking around a bit. So tonight I’ll sleep a bit better.
