Sometimes I honestly can’t believe how stupid I am. So about a million years ago a flatmate left behind a few boxes of these ice-cube bags (see below). I mean, there were a lot of them. And so I started to use them and hated them straight away. Really hard to fill, and the ice cubes were so small. Plus of course single use plastic. BUT I had so many of them and thought I shouldn’t just throw them out. Then yesterday I FINALLY used the last one (seriously, it’s been years with these things) and felt justified in buying some actual ice cube trays. Also stupid for not doing it sooner.
Throwing them away without using them because they’re single use would be kind of self-defeating.

Crappy ice trays are a unique frustration. When I was a kiddo the typical freezer tray was aluminum and had a lever that you pulled to break the cubes out, and that worked a treat. So naturally someone came up with cheap plastic ones that you twisted, which of course broke and tore after a few years of service. Last time, I bought fairly indestructible silicone ones, which unfortunately are as floppy as a pancake so that you have to perform a delicate dick-dance to fill them and set them in the freezer without splashing everywhere. Who said “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”?

I remember those metal ones. They worked but often the ice would shatter when the lever was pulled back. And yes, the twisty plastic ones always broke after a short time (have never tried silicon ones). But these ones! Best of both worlds as they are plastic but with a silicon bottom that you push and the cube just pops straight out. Also easy to fill with the lid on so water doesn’t spill everywhere. I feel a need to make cocktails now.
