I’m on a roll here. After checking how often I should replace pillows (FYI turned out to be every 1-2 years and I was way behind) I decided to check towels and – eep. Same. Well okay, not as bad as the pillow situation as it turns out I last bought new towels in 2021 and google says it should be between 2-5 years so I’m still in the running. You see, there is a reason I keep this fascinating blog going! How else could I check back on this stuff?
Anyhow, found these lovely towels at 50% off at El Corte Inglés and they are now freshly washed, sun dried, plump and soft and hanging in my bathroom as we speak. Goodbye old loofah towels! How’s your summer going, but the way?
Are you sure these recommendations aren’t sponsored by the textile companies?
Re: pillows, I can see it, but I still can’t let go of my smushy faux down pillows which are old enough to vote because without going out from store to store (which I am NOT doing thanks much) I can’t reliably predict the texture of any pillow I buy. Got new “support” pillows for the bottom layer last year and they’re nice. But I need a pillow I can squash into shape under my neck or I won’t sleep, so it’s just me and the dust mites.
But towels…? I just use them till the pile wears thin. A little bleach in the wash water, not enough to fade them, just to sanitize.

I did wonder if these were coming from Big Textile. I tend to get new sheets when the elastic goes on the fitted one and they have too many “cat nicks”, you know, the L-shaped ones. And no, sure wouldn’t buy a pillow without being able to touch it in person, and even then it’s tricky. My new ones are “medium” and I’m finding them quite comfy and comforting. What are support pillows?
My old towels were getting very thin and felt like loofahs after washed (remember, no tumble dryers here). But the new ones, even after sun drying on the roof, feel so lovely. I’m putting the old ones in a bag to leave open next to the bins as there are people who come by looking for what they can find and this way they won’t get mixed in with the smelly rubbish.

By “support” I mean pillows firm enough to raise my head where I need it, after which I can skoosh the mushy pillow into shape around it.
I do the same thing with things that are gently used but retired for my purposes. It’s amazing what people will scoop up in the US burbs — any metal that can be purveyed for scrap, flatpack furniture that’s in good shape, an entire steel tubing trundle bed (it looked like I was opening a curb service whorehouse), picture frames. We call it “leaving things for the elves.”
