I know it looks pretty but holy fuck is it hot. Most days this past week have been from 5-9 degrees hotter than the average for this time of year. Nine degrees hotter is a lot of degrees! It’s starting to come down a bit (from 42º to 37º) but only “cools” down to about 25º overnight. Someone on Bluesky said they wondered how I live here in this heat and I said I am sensible and mostly stay home with the AC on. I like to think I’ve convinced at least a few people NOT to come here for a summer holiday. We need our water supply and electrical grid intact (and for us!). ☀️ 🔥
You and me, babe. Here it’s soggy on top of hot, and I’m celebrating that to nights in a row it’s gone down to the upper sixties (Fahrenheit) before what looks like weeks more of swelter.
I don’t know what people expected. Climate scientists have been warning about this for, like, ever. I have a T-shirt I bought about the time I moved into this house thirty years ago with a cute cat sitting on a globe and a motto about global warming, ha ha. In other words, it was a concept that had already been current for so long people were making cute jokes, nice kitty yeah, but… it’s never been funny. I guess the whole world decided that because they weren’t roasting in real time, the concept was a fairy tale, just like people can’t SEE the curve of the earth so it must be flat, right?
And here we are with the US, one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas, rolling back any meaningful movement towards renewable energy. Fuck.

Denial is everywhere. Climate change, covid…

In Texas, where it’s arguable that gutting the nation’s weather services contributed to scores of deaths from flooding, there are apparently people claiming it happened because Biden had a secret chemical cloud seeding program to make it rain something something. I can’t even with the stupid.
Honestly, everywhere I go (my e mails, Bluesky, etc.) there are polemics exhorting me to “listen to MAGA” and “try to connect with them and reach out” and I just… fuck it. I’ve been listening to the stupid from people who were dead certain they were justified in some dumbass belief since I was single-digit ages and I’m done trying. Someone else with more idiot tolerance than me is going to have to do it.

I recently “separated” my Bluesky follows… the political ones now are now mostly on the azahar account. All the fun food and wine and travel stuff is on Sevilla Tapas. Some still overlap (you’re on both!). It was just getting to be too much because I am often scrolling when I’m wide awake middle of the night and most of Europe is asleep. Now I can move from one to the other, depending on what I feel like scrolling. Frankly the US stuff is just disheartening because NOBODY IS TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING or even trying to make a difference. Just a lot of hand-wringing “oh woe is us” crap. Hitler got away with it because there was no social media back then. What’s the excuse this time?
