Yes I know that I was supposed to wait until I had well and truly overcome the cancer, but here’s what happened. A couple of weeks ago I received two text messages from my mobile phone provider.  One said that I had received 22,000 points for ‘customer loyalty’ and could use them before the end of December to upgrade my phone, and the other said I was being given an extra 50,000 points to use towards the purchase of an iPhone (or Nokia 5800, or Samsung Omnia), again until the end of December. So the other day I went to the Telefónica store to see exactly what this meant, dinero-wise…

Do you have a Kindle?

My cuñada DKL mentioned this on a post awhile back (can’t remember which one) because she knows what a gadget junkie I am. And I’m really trying to like it and begin coveting it, but I can’t honestly see the benefit of having one (even if I could – at the moment they aren’t sold outside the US).

First of all, with a $359.00 purchase price and $10.00 per book, it’s not really any more economical than buying normal books, well, until you’ve maybe bought about 50 of them.  Also, I’m suspicious of the “revolutionary electronic-paper display that looks and reads like real paper”. Could it actually be much different from a computer screen (I cannot read long texts on a computer screen)? And what happens when you’ve reached the 200 book limit?

Basically, I can’t see the advantage of a Kindle over having one of these fabulous Toshiba lightweight beauties, which of course would do a lot more. But if anyone would like to convince me otherwise, I will add a Kindle  to my gadget wish list, though it’ll definitely come after the Toshiba Portégé, the iPhone and the 3-in-1 HP.  🙂

The HP TouchSmart 2 All-in-One multimedia PC is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and comes with a 22-inch LCD display, integrated DVD burner, WiFi connectivity, 4GB of RAM and integrated WLAN, along with wireless optical mouse and low-profile wireless keyboard with numeric keypad, and built-in TV-tuner.

I was out this morning with Judy, who needed to buy some printer ink, and we ended up in the computer section of El Corte Inglés.  I took the opportunity to visit, fondle and otherwise drool over, the gorgeous lightweight Toshiba that I’ve been coveting since last January. And then I saw this beautiful beast. I could hardly believe it … an all-in-one PC with no tower.

And so forget the iPhone. I decided I need more motivation than the purchase of an iPhone next year to overcome this cancer thing. 😉 Instead I’m planning to get one of these 22″ screen babies for my ‘office’ at home and the lightweight Toshiba for when I’m out and about (and I’ll still have Sexy Beast for when I want computer access in other parts of the house). Of course this will be after I work out that great new biz idea that’s going to make me rich and require that I have all this stuff. . .

What the heck – if I’m gonna dream might as well dream big.

Thanks to this little gadget (and the lovely & amazingly wonderful Pipocas) my looming hospital experience is now looking to be much less tedious than the last one. I was planning on taking Nog’s laptop with me to watch DVDs anyhow (his is smaller and more portable than mine) but now I’ll also be able to go online! Isn’t that fabulous? So I’ll be able to blog and chat and play scrabble whilst trying to ignore my roommate’s blaring television programmes. Of course this will only happen once I am able to sit up and move around … I’m hoping by day 3 after the op.

it’s truce’s fault!

Or at least it all started at truce’s …

Most of you know what a gadget junkie I am. If not, just check out here and here and here and here and here (to mention but a few of my recent gadgety obsessions).

Anyhow, the other day I read about truce getting a new iPhone and kinda thought “oh, that would be nice” … then a few days later I saw an ad for one on TV showing a few of the very coolísimo things it can do and I’ve been filled with covetous desire ever since.

Of course, given my present situation (living on donations and having a rather uncertain future) this dream is not about to become a reality anytime soon, if ever. But I can still dream and yesterday Nog said that I may become the first person to overcome cancer because she wanted to justify buying herself an iPhone. 😉
