noodly-appendage.JPG Pope prepares to embrace theory of intelligent design

After having had the recent pleasure of seeing the latest Bill Moyer’s series on Faith and Reason, it’s a bit shocking to be brought back into so-called REALITY where people are not nearly as enlightened. Nor as thoughtful, as intelligent, as reasonable.

Will the Pope now be condemning the teaching of evolutionary theory in the same manner that the Holy Roman Church lies to their flock about the effective use of condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS in third world countries? And possibly more importantly, is the Vatican getting into bed with fundamentalist right wing American extremists?

Why would the Pope want or need to do this? Does he feel the power of the Vatican is slipping?

50th birthday party!

Coming up January 7, 2007

The question is … what, if anything, should I be doing about it?

I know it’s still about four months away but I was recently asked if I’d made any plans for the big five-oh and I realised that I hadn’t even thought about it. Should I be thinking about it? I admit I’m quite a lover of birthdays and enjoy doing something special to celebrate – not just my own but also friends. For my 40th birthday I had a big party and invited 40 people but I’m not really in the mood for that sort of thing this time round.

So, any tips on what I can do to celebrate becoming half a century old? Personally, I’d love a trip to Barcelona but our present financial situation just doesn’t include being able to take any trips in the foreseeable future. No big deal really – January isn’t usually the best time to visit places anyhow (Lisbon is also on my list).

I guess I’d really like to hear about how other people have celebrated their own landmark birthdays, anniversaries, etc to get a bit of inspiration.

Apparently I’m also supposed to be having a mid-life crisis any minute now … which I reckon is a bit optimistic as this would mean I’m planning to live till I’m 100. 😉

Anhoodle … any ideas?

dream jobs

What work would you do if you could do anything you wanted?

A lot of us are working at jobs out of necessity, or at jobs that ‘happened’ to us rather than being our preferred choice. And often people get stuck doing things that pay the bills, etc and our dreams (and dream jobs) end up left by the wayside.

But here is our chance to either remember those dreams or create new ones.

You often read about people winning millions in the lottery and their lives totally fall apart as they try behaving like stereotypical millionaires, simply buying MORE STUFF and sinking into a life of leisure that leaves them feeling empty and unsatisfied.

You see, I’ve always thought that having satisfying personal work is a basic need for all of us. Quite different from what most jobs end up being. I know one or two people whose jobs are exactly what they want to be doing every single morning when they get out of bed and it’s hard not to envy them a bit.

So, what sort of work would you be doing if you could do anything you wanted to? No limits in terms of Reality … what is the thing you would want to do every morning when you get up that would give you the most personal satisfaction?

hair!

Does anyone actually like their hair?

Gimme a head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, Streaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as I can grow it My hair

When I was growing up I had the stupidest hair ever. Well, still do, but it was rather harsh having to grow up with it.

A bit of personal history. My mother was half-Cree Indian with thick straight shiny gorgeous hair, the type most people dream of. My father was of Irish descent with a thin frizzy curly mop on his head. Guess whose hair I ended up inheriting???

So unfair! Also, my younger sister got the thick straight gorgeous Indian hair and spent years perming it so as to make it curly. Gaaaaaa!

I maintain I would have turned out a much more emotionally balanced and happy person had I been blessed with straight thick hair 😉 And I’m only partially kidding about that. I grew up with what amounted to having a demented looking poodle sitting on my head most of the time – which did no wonders for my already shaky self-esteem I can tell ya.

Anyhow, I was reminded of this today when I went out for my twice a year haircut. I’ve had the same haircut for about thirty years now – a simple chin length bob. The hairdresser spent about half an hour drying it straight and making me look fabulous … then the minute I walked out the door into humidity and heat and start sweating the ol’ poodle thing started happening again.

You will rarely see a photo of me without my so-called hair slicked back into a ponytail or a bun … it’s just too hideous to consider otherwise.

in dreams

Do you remember your dreams?

I find I go through periods where I have some real doozies and remember them all in graphic detail and other times when I don’t seem to dream at all. I was once told I could train myself to remember my dreams by keeping a dream diary but half the time I think I’m happier not remembering them. Though I find that sometimes when I can’t remember my dreams mentally my body seems to remember them and then I am somewhat ‘haunted’ by odd feelings throughout the day that have a surreal dreamlike quality about them.

And what about dream interpretation and analysis? Are the archetypes actually significant or are they too general to be meaningful for us as individuals?

Or perhaps dreams are simply random cerebral and emotional ‘left-overs’ without any meaning other than that which we choose to give them?
