surfthechannel1-2

The other day my friend Kristin suggested I try out surfthechannel to find a new tv series she had recommended. So I checked it out yesterday and it looked like a fabulous idea, but upon using it I have found a few annoying glitches.

STC doesn’t stream videos or host content and so the videos available are hosted and shown from sites such as Y! Video, Tudou & Megavideo. I’ve tried all three. Tudou has massive subtitles in Japanese that take up almost a quarter of the screen, Y! Video has serious buffering problems and Megavideo limits your viewing time to 70 minutes – if you want to continue watching you either have to wait an hour or else pay a monthly fee (10€ a month). Also, if you click to full screen on any of them the image goes all pixillated. It’s a shame because STC has a massive library that includes films, cartoons, sports, etc.

Has anyone else tried STC?

Looks like it’s back to adding to my Amazon wish list …

sex and the city quiz

You scored 6 out of a possible 10

We can only hope you’ve picked up this much information by accident. Stop reading weekly magazines and go and watch The Wire instead.

Take the Quiz

I totally agree. In fact, I am in the middle of The Wire series 5 on dvd – it’s fabulous! (thanks again Dan 🙂 )

Thing is, until about two weeks ago I had seen maybe one or two of these programmes in my life, when I first got the ‘original version’ adsl tv service a year and a half ago. Then after I got home from the hospital I found out that it comes on here at 9.30 every morning (just after brekky and blogging), and as that is a perfect time for me to hit the armchair and put my feet up for an hour – and this really is the most inoffensive thing on at this time – I started watching it. Apparently last week I saw the end of the last series and now they seem to be starting over from the beginning.

It actually isn’t horrible and, although I wouldn’t watch it under ‘normal’ circumstances, I can see why it became so popular – it’s kind of like a somewhat more grown-up version of Friends. One thing I haven’t been able to figure out is whether the way they dress the scrawny bow-legged main character (Carrie) is supposed to be some sort of joke on the fashion industry. She always looks like her closet has just vomited all over her. And you’d think they’d be able to do something with her hair …

Anyhow, I hope you all score much worse than I did – at least I have an excuse! 😉

Thanks to Pipocas I am now addicted to Six Feet Under.

She lent me the first series a couple of weeks ago, which I devoured pretty quickly. Then I picked up series 2 when we met for lunch yesterday (and did another dvd/book swap) at Casa Roman – missed a couple of good photo ops for the tapas blog that I’m still kicking myself about f_cross.gif.

Also inadvertently spoiled a couple of upcoming surprises in the series by glancing through that Wiki link. But after getting through a slightly drunken post-lunch recuperation English class yesterday evening I made some Orville’s (hey – new popcorn mule coming in on Sunday!) and watched a couple of episodes. Does anyone else like this series as much as Pipocas and I do?

[Note to self: do not schedule classes after lunches with Pipocas]

From this BBC News article, here is a list of the top 25 put-downs in TV history, as chosen by the Radio Times magazine.

I think there must be lots of much better ones, though I did especially like Carla’s and Patsy’s . . .

Can you think of any others?
