In Spain Christmas Eve is the big deal, with the massive family meal, gifts, etc. On Christmas Day everyone goes out for tapas. I made a very non-traditional (but delicious) pork shoulder in oloroso sauce, and a bunch of side dishes. How about you?

In an attempt to feel a bit Christmassy I went over to Casa Moreno today for a festive Cold Beer O’clock and resident poet Emilio gave me this little Christmas message (below) with a hand-drawn nativity scene and star on the Triana Bridge. I’ve somehow lost all my Christmas joy over the years – it used to be my favourite time of year – and I really miss it. This message helped. I’ll see what I can do…

Accidentally stumbled into this yesterday – this year’s “mapping” at City Hall. I remember the first time they did this here back in 2012 (!) and I thought it was pretty cool. But in the following years the “show” got bigger, flashier and louder, with pop Christmas hits playing, and so I stopped going. Then I happened upon this one and it was actually quite lovely and subdued with classic Spanish Christmas tunes. Might even go back.

Hola December! Since l don’t have a Sherry Advent Calendar I am making do by starting off the month with a breakfast mince pie each day courtesy of my lovely London friend Deb. She brought me two kinds: M&S Classic and Waitrose Brown Butter with Cognac. I realise I will run out half-way to Christmas but have recently been informed that El Corte Inglés supermarket carries Walkers mince pies. Not sure if they’re any good but I guess there’s only one way to find out.
