hepa filter, sevilla

A couple of weeks ago my hepa purifier started acting wonky. At first it was just stopping randomly, and would go again if I pressed the start button, but this also set off the other buttons blinking away. Eventually it just stopped. So I checked here on my handy every day blog (most boring blog in the world!) and saw I’d bought it in July 2023 and it was still on warranty.

I found a Levoit service email online and wrote to them, not expecting much after all the hassle I got trying to replace the air fryer (which they never did). But to my surprise I got a reply the next day asking me to take a video of it “not working” when I pressed the start button, a copy of the invoice and a photo of the product ID number. I dutifully sent that off straight away and the next day got another email saying they had approved the replacement but they required a photo of the supply cord cut in half, to ensure it wouldn’t be used in the future. Um, okay.

Anyhow, a new hepa should be on its way soon, though apparently the guarantee on this one will only last until the end date of the original. Better than nothing!

baby hepa

Yes, I know I shouldn’t be buying anything right now but I’ve justified this in all kinds of ways. First of all because for the past two days I’ve had a killer sore throat, with accompanying ick, but no fever and (so far) still testing negative for Covid. BUT I’ve been taking the hepa filter into my bedroom at night, mostly for the cats and also to help keep whatever this is from spreading all over the apartment since it’s too cold to open windows now.

This morning I started thinking it might be a good idea to have a backup hepa so I had a look on Amazon and saw this one. It was less than half the price of my original one and I wondered why. Turns out the reason is because it’s only effective for spaces up to 17 sq meters (the other is up to 40). But you know, my bedroom is maybe 10 sq meters. So I’ve gone for it and brand new baby hepa will be here tomorrow morning.

It makes sense for all kinds of reasons. My bedroom is interior, meaning there’s a window that opens onto the patio, which is nice for light but I never open it (it wouldn’t be fresh air anyhow). The other rooms, including Peter’s bedroom, have balconies facing the street, with big doors can be opened. So the plan is to have baby hepa as the one that gets swapped around if anyone is sick (though it will mostly stay in my bedroom), with Mama Hepa still going 24-7 in the main living room/office.

Finally, it’s almost Christmas, so this is my Christmas present to myself.

hepa cleaning

fluffy dusters

Yesterday a notice popped up in my calendar to clean the hepa filter. I remember setting the reminder to repeat every 3 weeks, as per the instructions (filter replacement every 6-8 months). For cleaning it’s recommended to use a vacuum (or soft cloth), but as my vacuum is broken I used one of these fluffy duster thingys, and wow, it really worked. But I was shocked to see that the filter was already quite gross and totally covered in dust fluff. Then I checked back here on my trusty blog to see when I bought the hepa and realised that I had somehow missed the first cleaning and it’s been 6 weeks. Oops.

Well, at least I know it’s working! And clearly doing a good job.

hepa filter

In the better-late-than-never department (and thanks to a push from Amazon Prime Day – it was 20% off!) I decided it was time to splash out on an air purifier (with hepa filter) for Casa Azahar. It occurred to me that the times Covid has been in the house (me once, Peter twice) it was during either spring of autumn, so there was no problem with leaving the balcony doors open for ventilation. But if it happened during summer or winter we would be stuck with closed windows. And my bedroom window opens into the patio, so it is always closed.

In any case, it’s probably a good idea to have one of these going and this one is a good size for the living room / office space.  In case you’re interested here it is… Levoit Air Purifier.
