Actually, I was quite pleased to find a photo that even had red toenails (happy feet!) like me. 🙂
Awhile ago I was inspired by anhaga to try his Eat Less Exercise More ‘radical’ weight loss programme but wasn’t quite ready for it at the time. Now I am. Especially after a week of divine debauchery (see magical mystery tour).
Though exercising more is not going to be easy in 45ºC temperatures . . .

To be honest, this is only in part about losing weight. So I’m not actually going on a *diet*, though I will modify my eating habits somewhat. I think that focussing on being more active is the thing that’s going to help me feel more energetic, healthier, more flexible, focussed, etc – though of course losing some extra tonnage also won’t hurt in those departments. . .

Day two – did loads of crunches this morning and felt the bruised painful feeling subside somewhat . . . even noticed that chubby belly is ‘sitting up’ a bit differently, not quite so floppy. Hey, I’m liking this. 🙂

Losing weight is not the problem. The problem is to not gain weight again. I´ve bounced up and down most of my grown up life. Regardless of reason to and method of losing weight I´ve always slowly become fatter again.
This time I´m still less fat than I was before. It´s hard to maintain what I´ve once fought hard to reach. The last year I´ve started to exrecise quite hard, but no weight loss so far… maybe more muscular thighs due to all cycling…

Well, after my operation about 6-7 years ago – a hysterectomy – I just went phhhhht! in terms of doing any physical exercise. Well, of course I wasn’t allowed to do anything for at least three months, but weirdly once that time factor passed, I had got into the habit of doing fuck all and couldn’t get out of that.
And it was so hard to find the wherewithall – the basic personal need – to start all that up again.
By then I had just turned 43, still not bad looking, still not too fat or anything … but not feeling so great about myself in general.
So that’s kind of where I want to get back to – or forward to – that feeling great about myself in general. Physically, emotionally, etc.
Bit of a ramble . . .

End of week one, which was sort of a ‘transitional’ period, if I may rationalise somewhat. 😉
I hear ya, dragonqueen, about the problem with keeping lost weight off – which I reckon becomes more difficult after a ‘certain age’.
This is in part why – to start off – I’m focussing more on ‘doing more’ because I want to develop healthier daily exercise habits before I start worrying about food intake too much. Having ‘dieted’ for so many years of my adult life I recognise that this can actually be quite counter-productive.
In fact, everytime I’ve successfully lost and kept weight off in the past was by becoming more active, which makes me just naturally want to eat a bit less somehow.
So, no weight was lost this past week – but I also didn’t put any on. And I’m getting back into riding The Bike in the mornings, doing those daily crunches, and also taking more long walks. Poco á poco . . .

How about the swimming pool, az? It might at first seem like a hassle, but it is an excellent place to do exercise of one sort or another…and it’ll be cool. Ever considered aquarobics?

I don’t see where being serious about improving my cardiovascular health has to include public humiliation (she says smugly after having just spent half an hour on The Bike).
I don’t know what my resting pulse rate is. My doctor used to say I had the pulse of a snake so I reckon it’s still low-normal.
And as for the ‘podgy’ image I project – gee thanks a lot but I don’t really need any help in the self-loathing department … 😦

I don’t think I’m being overly ‘touchy’ to feel badly about being told I project a ‘podgy’ image, to be honest.
Makes me wonder if I should get rid of my header, showing me all ‘podgily’ stretched out there … I actually hadn’t thought I looked *that* bad even though that pic was taken at the same weight I am now. 😕
In any case, as I’ve already posted here, this is really about a serious life-style change. It isn’t just about dieting and so it could well take me two or three years to get down to what I consider to be an acceptable healthy body weight.
But meanwhile I will have been changing various habits to include regular exercise and also some changes in my daily diet. And that way – I reckon – is the only way I’ll start feeling and looking better on a more permanent basis, rather than if I just dieted like an idiot and lost a lot of weight quickly.

My only reason to keep in somewhat is shape is health related. My own fatness has caused enough trouble for me already and I don´t long for more.
But admittingly it is funnier to buy and wear nice clothes when you´re 60 kg than +85kg…

Okay, I better make a contribution since Az has credited me with inspiration.
Now, after almost five months and 35 lbs I’d have to say, in retrospect, my radical method is mostly ‘eat less’ and a little bit of ‘exercise more’. The exercise more part amounts to about 40 minutes on the stationary bike a few times a week, parking a little farther from the store, walking to the farmer’s market on Saturday, and doing 80 pushups before bed. The eat less part consists of hardly eating anything. I have days where I basically eat only what I grow myself. Sometimes I treat myself to a bit of sushi from 7-11. I have as many Punjabi pappadum as I want. I suspect that most days most of my calories come from the evening homebrew with a splash of single-malt on the side.
The exercise side of the equation should be easy to maintain, since it isn’t horribly different from an ordinary day. And now the eating less part is happy routine.
Breakfast this morning:
2 Punjabi Pappadum
1 banana
lots of coffee.
Don’t know whether I’ll bother with lunch.
Dinner will probably be a mug of squash blossom soup.
As good as or better than one most people in the world can expect to eat today.

I think I’ve been there. And it also worked for me – eating next to nothing, doing some extra exercise, having a bit of booze to round it all off. And you’re right – it works!
I used to eat a couple of dried apricots for breakfast, a bran muffin with coffee for lunch and a cheese & tomato sandwich for dinner with one bottle of Beck’s beer – after about four months of this I weighed 115 pounds. Oh, I also ran every morning, and also did a bit extra this and that.
This was when I was 21 years old. Had a 24 inch waist, no tits, hardly any bum and Audrey Hepburn upper arms. I thought I looked great, but people looking back on photos of me then actually cringe and say I look kind of creepy, like my head is way too big for my body.
Anyhow, no way no day I’d ever be that skinny again – nor would I want to be. I’d look like total shit because it does behove a woman of a certain age to have an extra bit of flesh happening.
I think I understand your personal motivation, anhaga, and I respect it. But the not eating bit is not something I’m prepared to do anymore.
My case is more trying to get through the ‘not hating myself so much’ thing so that I start doing things that are actually good for me. This seems to be taking a bit more time than previously thought … but I’m still going for the extra activity stuff every day.
Eat less do more seems quite fine to me.
Eat next to nothing, do a bit something more is not something I can go with. Mostly because I don’t want to go *back there* – it’s not a time of my life I care to remember.
But hey – I’m doing 100 crunches in the morning, also riding that damned Bike for half an hour. And finding ways to feed Nog tons of calories while I just nibble on this and that.

What it comes down to is, I’m not going to bust my ass with exercise so that I can eat more food than I need to or should.
One rainy day many years ago when work at he archaeological dig had been suspended due to the downpour, a young coleague didn’t get up off his bed when lunch time came. We’d all been lying around chatting or reading for the morning. ‘Let’s go get lunch, Dave’ we said. ‘I haven’t done anything today, there’s no point in eating’ Dave replied.
That remark has stuck with me. To put it another way, if we are in the habit of filling up the fuel tank in our car every monday morning, do we still go fill it if we haven’t driven for a week?
I’m not planning to go out and drive around aimlessly all week just so I can head down to the Petro-Canada on monday morning.

I think it does makes good sense not to ‘refill the tank’ if you haven’t been driving, anhaga. But for myself I don’t see it as aimlessly driving around just so I can fill ‘er up again. I know how much better I feel in both body and mind when I get regular exercise, so I’m working on getting there again.
Well, mostly I’ve been thinking about working on it whilst making a few changes … putting my toe in, so to speak, before actually taking the plunge.
Um, how long can a transition phase last before it becomes a permanent condition? 😉

Hmm. What a bunch of great comments. I for one do not think you look podgy, but I’m not exactly sure what that really means. I also really like the idea of not filling the tank if you haven’t been driving. Unfortunately, the analogy doesn’t quite hold true because even if you haven’t been driving for a while, your body tank gets empty because your silly body goes and stores the excess.
For me, I want to make sure that I don’t create so much avoirdupois that I develop insulin resistance and subsequent adult onset diabetes, which is a definite risk. My older sister, who is more than podgy, she is morbidly obese (over 350 pounds) developed this condition recently and is now on medication and a very strict diet. So far her blood sugar is under control and she has lost 14 pounds in a month.
If you think our proposed regime of doing more and eating less is hard, try researching the diabetic diet and think about living that way the rest of your life, plus if you are on the medication you cannot drink ANY alcohol because of the high possibility of a fatal interaction between it and the medication.
THAT would be a horrible fate! To never get to have another glass of good red wine again? Or the homebrew?

A friend of mine in Toronto is suffering from scleroderma and is on a whole cocktail of various daily drugs that don’t allow her to enjoy even one glass of wine.
She really misses it, even though she was never much of a drinker at all. But not even one glass! That’s hard on her.

You´ll survive it… I had to quit booze a while ago due to medication and my neurologic condition. But what sometimes p*sses me off is the intolerance from people – always being asked “why?”; “and just a glass of wine can´t do you no harm” etc…
Then the alternatives to drink are often childish. I´m not much of a lemonade or soft drink person, which not always is tasty with food. Mineral water is usually what goes down my throat…

Quite agree that there aren’t many other drink options to have with a meal. For me it’s either wine or water. A sweet drink would just NOT work somehow.

I have found that water is the best thing to accompany my meal; I like it with a wedge of lemon and most places will do that for you.
I have also gotten a pretty little metal box about the size of a compact for my purse and I keep a couple of my favorite herbal tea bags in it. Then I can ask for hot water and make a tea that I like with it. Peppermint tea is always good, and the company Celestial Seasonings (which I don’t know whether that is available to everyone) makes one called Bengal Spice that is real tasty.

Celestial Seasonings does a lovely orange and clove tea called Constant Comment. I usually get people from NA to send it to me as I can’t buy it in Spain.
Though I also don’t like drinking tea with my meals. Or Peppermint tea at any time (ick).
These days I’m drinking about 3 litres of mineral water a day – how much water would be *too much*?

I don’t much care for tea with meals, either, not even green tea with Chinese food. But water works fine as far as I’m concerned, along with the occasional splash of wine.

Constant Comment is not an herbal tea, usually. It has black tea in it and so you will be getting some caffeine there. Which is not all bad, despite its bad rap.
Sorry you don’t like peppermint. It is one of my favorites, but I know everyone doesn’t like it. However, it is an herb that promotes good digestion, so that is partly why I mentioned it.
About water: It is always a good idea to make sure you are drinking plenty of water, especially when it is bloody hot and you are sweating. The rule of thumb on how much to drink is take your weight (in pounds) and divide it in half. This is how many fluid ounces of water you should consume per day. One liter equals about 34 fl. oz. It is about 2 pounds to a kilo, so youwould just take your weight in kilos and that would be how many fl. oz you needed. If you are still thirsty or sweating a lot, drink a little more.
However, there is a huge caveat here. Your electrolyte balance is hugely important.

You’re right, PC – Constant Comment is made by Bigelow. And you’re right, hmh, that it is not a herbal tea – it’s a black tea with orange and clove spices added. Always smells like Christmas to me. 🙂
My absolute favourite tea is in fact a herbal one called tila – they say it’s a lime blossom tea but I dunno. It mostly tastes like twigs to me. But somehow I find it lovely. It’s also supposed to be a natural sedative but I reckon I’d need about four gallons of it to have any effect on me. A glass or two of wine tends to do the trick much more efficiently.
Is there a difference between mint tea and peppermint tea? It’s mint tea I hate – is peppermint tea in any way different?

Probably mint and peppermint tea are the same. You would have to look at the ingredients on the package, because the mint tea also may be spearmint which is different than peppermint. All in the same family, but different flavors.
Now that my two morning clients have come and gone, I can go into the electrolyte thing a bit more in depth. Earlier I had gotten a very long and lovely detailed lesson on electrolytes typed and I hit the wrong key on the keyboard and it disappeared into the electronic ether. You can just imagine what kind of loving things I had to say towards my compter about THAT.
Electrolytes are the inorganic compounds floating around in your bodily fluids that are capable of dissociating into ions, and therefore capable of carrying an electronic charge. They are critically important to the fluid balances in your body. They are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine and bicarbonate. Physiologically speaking, if your electrolytes are not balanced correctly, your kidneys and liver cannot work right, neither can your nervous system, your muscles will not contract or if they do contract will not relax, and you cannot sweat.
If you drink too much water without electrolytes in it, the electrolytes in your body can become so diluted that they no longer are effective at conducting the electrical charge they need to and things stop working right. If you do not drink enough water, the tissues of your body become so gluey and thick that nutrients and electrolytes cannot diffuse through them properly and things stop working right. If your electrolytes become depleted because you have excreted them, or sweated them out of your body, the system that needs that particular electrolyte to function stops working. Sometimes this is so serious you die.
It is also important that they be in your body in the right ratio to each other. Of course, all of us as women know how critically important calcium is to the health of our bones, so we are likely to be supplementing it already. What, you aren’t? Tsk tsk, start immediately. You do not want to have osteoporosis when you are old. Get a calcium supplement that supplies 1000mg of calcium citrate along with 500 mg of magnesium and 400 i. u. s of Vitamin D and start taking it.
The two electrolytes that are most critical for keeping your body cool are sodium and potassium. In order for you to sweat effectively and thereby keep the core temperature of your body from climbing too high, you need sodium and potassium in your bloodstream and roughly a ration of 1:2 sodium:potassium. Your body will function without this ratio, but it will start robbing potassium from other places to accomplish what it needs to in order for you to sweat, and you will probably start feeling confused, dizzy, moody, and start getting muscle cramps if you keep up the imbalance for too long. The sad thing is that most of our diets do not provide this proper ratio. Most of us are eating chips and other salty snacks, and getting this ratio completely bass ackward. We get potassium from fruits and vegetables, so the best way to fight this electrolyte imbalance is to replace salty snacks with fruits and vegetables, which is of course, better for our waistlines anyway.
You can also, if you are in a very hot climate where a lot of sweating is going on, supplement yourself with an electrolyte powder that you can add to your water. This is what the raft guides in the Grand Canyon recommend and do, and you can imagine that rowing a raft with 5 people and their gear in 120 degree F heat will make you very aware of how to keep your electrolytes in balance. I do not recommend using Gatorade powder, and not just because it is filled with artificial colors and flavors. It also does not supply you with the proper ratio of sodium to potassium, in fact it is exactly backwards, and actually supplies sodium:potassium at a ratio of 3:1 when it OUGHT to be 1:2. This actulaly helps keep you thirsty and ultimately leads to the sale of more Gatorade. I use two different things: Emergen-C by a company called Alacer and Hydralyte by a company called Gookinade (they are Australian).
Is that enough, or shall I go on????
P.S. I am up to 75 each of all the crunches, walked 1 mile yesterday. Helped Jim unload a pickup load of firewood this morning. I weighed today, and I am holding at 194 which is good because it means that I have actually lost a whole kilo and it is staying off. And my belly is also starting to lose the close relationship it was having with my lap. Hurray for us!

Well, to be honest, I’m doing better with the ‘doing more’ bit at the moment. Have decided I am not ever going to go on another *diet* for as long as I live, which I think is quite a practical and sensible thing.
Meanwhile, *slow* progress is good. It means your body is getting used to the changes in a way that won’t threaten it … apparently a constant weight loss of about 1 kilo a month is the best way to go.
Slow but sure, you know?
Anyhow, I’ve pretty muched moved all this to a more private place where I deal with all this stuff not so publicly as on this particular blog.
But please feel free to keep talking about your progress here if you like.

As far as I’m concerned, my weight has fluctuated a little (a LOT) over the last few years. Basically over the last year or so, I am down over 11 Kilos. The good thing is the swings seem to have stopped for me. The weight stays stable for a bit then drops a pound or two – all I have to do is get through things like Christmas.
I subscribe now to the only diet which works – that I think you know by a similar name – the Eat Less & Do More.

A pound or two here or there – shit I can lose or gain five pounds overnight! I don’t even start considering myself ‘overweight’ until I’ve put on at least a stone.
But yeah, the do more and eat less thing is the only way to go. I’ve just been re-reading an intersting book called On Eating which is rather amazing. And no, not a ‘girly’ thing … really an interesting way to look at how and why we eat.

I was in the situation where I could swing half a stone (7 or 8 pounds) and not notice.
What I eventually decided to do was try to catch the bottom of one of those, then work from there. And so far so good.
Just read the reviews of On Eating – looks interesting – though I don’t think my problem is overeating through hunger etc. There are several issues there, and I’m quite good at the hunger one. What I struggle with is eating through boredom, for comfort etc. But progress is being made.

And that is exactly the sort of thing this book deals with – and rather well, imho. About eating when we’re not hungry and discovering why. Especially comfort eating stuff. It’s a very small book, can be read in an hour. And it only costs 5 pounds. Might be worth a look?

Which may well be about to happen – since I have started suffering from a bout of back pain last night – which if it continues is going to make the “doing more” part of the plan hard.
Also, unless it confines me to the floor, which thankfully isn’t happening yet the “Eating Less” bit may get tougher as well.

How’s the back, Johnny? This has often happened to me when starting a new exercise programme – the ol’ back suddenly goes gaaaaaaa! and I end up not being able to do more than painfully shuffle around for a week or so. Bugger, eh?

As far as I can tell, it is traceable to a motorbike accident I had a few years (well maybe a lot of years) ago. Its a long story, but I wrecked one of my knees. I don’t think I damaged my back in the accident itself, but the knee trouble lead to me walking badly, and that combined with having to have my leg broken to correct my stance was when the back “went” for the first time.
Since then it happens intermittently sometimes without anything obvious triggering it.
I have at last got around to making a Dr.s appointment so that some investigation can be done on it, so we’ll have to see what comes out of that.
I was right though – did the weight loss ever stall over the weekend?!It went wildly into reverse. Still – hopefully I am back on the straight and narrow now.

My compressed lower disk problem might be a result from an unfortunate toboganning experience when I was 19 – hit a bump in the snow, went totally up-and-down again and couldn’t walk for a week.
But whatever the cause it still ails me and the best thing I can do is make sure I keep my abs in shape – you know, DO THOSE CRUNCHES and keep up the abdominal support for everything your back ends up having to do.
Though I remember once getting a serious bout of sciatica from just sneezing!

Indeed – I cause great amusement in this house if, especially when my back is just getting better, I feel that I’m going to sneeze. They see me trying to brace myself for what’s coming . .
Coughing when you’re not ready for it can do the trick quite nicely as well.

I can’t remember what the force of a sneeze has been clocked at – something like 60 miles an hour?
But really, just about anything can ‘do it’ once you have lower back issues. Once I went to get some stuff out of the laundry hamper to put in the wash and ended up totally on the floor in excrutiating pain and then crawling on all fours to the bed going OUCH OUCH OUCH …
It’s no picnic, that’s for sure. But I’ve found I can sometimes ‘nip it in the bud’ if I can immediately get onto my bed and, lying on my back, just ever-so-gently pull my knees towards my chest – just as far as you can go without it hurting. This seems to gently open up the ‘pinched nerve’ area so that no further damage is done. Then a series of hot and cold packs (for 15 minutes each – no more) helps relieve the pain and also soothe the nerve damage.
I’ve never taken muscle relaxants but always take some sort of anti-inflammatory painkiller for about four days or so.
I also used to go to the chiropractor, when I lived in Toronto – total waste of time and money in my humble opinion.
Once read a very good book called The Back Doctor (can’t remember the author) who backed up all my feelings about chiropractors. Much better to pay for a good masseuse or – even better – a shiatsu practitioner.
So, are you feeling better now?

Have seen a GP and am now waiting to see a specialist for scans etc.
I am assuming that if there is nothing “sinister” which the GP is pretty confident that there itsn’t, then I assume I’ll be heading down the Physio/Osteopath/Chiropractor route. Though I have tried osteopathy before without much joy.
In terms of pain relief, what was recommended for me and seems to work is a combination of ibuprofen as an anti-inflammatory and paracetomol for the pain. As they have different ways of working you can take the maximum dose of each. I have been given some super-strength Ibuprofen on prescription a few years ago on the grounds that once you’ve had a “bad back” . .

What makes the other blog different? Is it just the content, or have you set it up in some way differently for the more personla stuff?
That is, if explaining that on a public blog doesn’t defeat the obkect in some way.

It’s mostly a content thing. They are both public blogs but the azahar one is more of a personal journal about stuff going on in my life. It just seemed odd to mix those posts with the usual casa az stuff.
