It was the best birthday present ever!
Not only that, but also the best holiday either Nog or I have ever had. We got home last night about 12.30 am, totally exhausted and footsore but also very very happy.
We took tons of photos … the Barcelona albums are still under construction and will be ‘unlocked’ as soon as they have been edited and organised.
This is a recap of our fabulous long weekend …
Friday January 12th
- arrived in Barcelona 1.30pm, checked into hotel
- lunch in Gothic quarter (braised endive, salmon in caper sauce…)
- long walk along Las Ramblas
- visit to amazing market and Plaza Real (discovered by accident!)
- metro to Plaza de España to see the Magic Fountains at 7pm – WOW!!!
- quick stop at Corte Inglés to pick up snacky stuff
- back at hotel around 10pm; slipped into fluffy robes, drank
and had a picnic of fresh bread, caña de lomo and cheese
Saturday January 13th
- brekky in hotel about 8.45 – very nice selection of just about everything
- took the metro up to Sagrada Familia
- walked back along the Diagonal and the Paseo de Gracia
- tried to get into La Pedrera – was told it was closed until Monday
- up to the rooftop of the Majestic Hotel where we paid 12 fucking euros for 2 beers! In plastic cups!!! Amazing view though…
- visit to Gaudí’s Casa Batlló … a breathtaking, awe-inspiring experience.
- lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe – just had to do it as neither of us had ever done it before. The food was surprisingly good.
- foot massages and siesta back at hotel
- wandered around getting lost in the Gothic quarter at night … it was quite fun. I bought a prezzie for our cat-sitter Maria del Mar and Nog bought me a beautiful bracelet
- back to the hotel for rioja and snacks, including Syrian pastries (a variation of the arabic ones we get in Sevilla).
Sunday January 14th
- brekky at the hotel, wished the coffee was better
- walk through El Raval to the waterfront (found a VERY LARGE cat)
- visit to the Aquarium
- wandered around the Ribera and then went to the Picasso Museum
- found amazing pizza restaurant – great food and wonderful ‘ambientation’
- stroll back to hotel along Las Ramblas
- rested tired feet at hotel whilst drinking rioja and watching a very interesting National Geographic documentary all about Tasmanian Devils
- evening stroll on the Gran Via … stopped for a tapa and then went back to the hotel for more rioja and left-over pizza
Monday January 15th
- last brekky at the hotel
- packed up and left bags at reception to pick up in the evening
- took bus up to Parc Güell – spent about two hours there. Could have spent much longer but time was running out
- back down to the Paseo de Gracia to see La Pedrera
- went to nearby Thai restaurant for lunch

- it was closed!

- next door there happened to be an incredible Argentinian restaurant

- remembered we hadn’t yet seen the beach … turned out we needn’t have bothered
- back to hotel along Las Ramblas – picked up a couple of take-away falafels to eat at the airport since our flight left at 9.45 pm (and we didn’t want to have to eat airport food)
- finally back home in Sevilla around 12.30 am and after spending rather a lot of ‘quality cuddling time’ with the cats we finally crashed around 2 am
It really was the best holiday ever. For both of us the most amazing experience was visiting Gaudí’s Casa Batllo – I’m sure my photos won’t do it justice. We passed it last night when we were on the bus going to the airport and it looked even more magical, lit up both inside and out. I wished we’d had more time to also visit it properly at night.
Other highlights included visiting the other Gaudí sites. But some of our best times were when we were just wandering around half-lost and then coming across a pretty square or interesting street, etc. Honestly, there were at least a hundred other photos I didn’t take … simply because we were just too busy enjoying the moment .

I’ll get to the photos as soon as they’re there – but in the meantime, the question that comes to mind is ‘How did the cats behave in your absence?’ Are they being civil to each other now?

Wow, what a trip! Some of that stuff sounds amazing… can’t wait to see photos!!
Glad you both enjoyed yourselves so much, and that you returned home safely.
12 (fucking) Euros sounds about what you’d have paid for a couple of cups of beer at a hotel here, too. But sometimes, it’s all part of The Experience, and therefore Worth It. 😀

Barcelona is one of my all time favourite places – I spent a wonderful long weekend there a few years ago and loved it. I can’t wait to see your photos!

The Casa Batllo pics are now up and semi-edited now. It’s taken ages to go through all the photos and organise them into albums so it may be awhile yet before they are all properly edited.
Oh yes, here is a special album we made for zoomer … caption ideas welcome 😉

Re: the 12 (fucking) euros for two beers … yes, in Toronto this would probably be the price at a snazzy hotel or bar. But usually those beers would have cost about 1.25€.

Oh, forgot to answer Ivan’s question about the cats. Well, they were kept in separate rooms while we were away and my friend Maria del Mar checked up on them, changed the water, scooped out the cat boxes (bless her)so they were fine when we got home, other than feeling very lonely.
Of course Sunny responded to our return in doggy-style, coming over to me right away and starting to purrrrrr as soon as I picked him up. Azar was clearly pissed off and decided to make us suffer for an hour or so after we got home before he came out from under the bed and let us cuddle him.
So far they are being civil to each other when I am in the room with them, but they still have to be kept apart when we are out of the house and also at night.
I did really miss them though. Not having a cat or two in bed just doesn’t feel right somehow.

Okay, the miscellany and magic fountain albums are now open.
I’d really prefer to have everything edited properly but if I wait for that you may not see any photos at all for ages.

Much like my photos? 😛
The pics are amazing, it looks like you had a great time. Thanks for the opportunity to add my comments to the street signs, I did so as soon as I saw them. 🙂

No, not at all like your photos, zoomer, as I will end up editing them before six months have passed …
Meanwhile, I think people should be in a bit on the reason we made that special album for you … which as you know is because of this album you made while you were visiting us here in Sevilla.
Just so you know, I had a small crowd of people laughing at me while I was taking a photo of the dog poo sign – just for you!

sounds like an awesome trip! J took me to New York City for my birthday once, and the funny part is we ended up paying a ridiculous amount of money for 2 drinks there ($30).

Well, the 12 euro beers were the only shocking ‘big city’ thang we experienced. Mostly the prices seemed similar to Sevilla. And even cheaper at times.
Since brekky was included with our room we ended up splashing out on a nice late lunch each day … at night we preferred to ‘picnic’ back in the hotel room with snacky stuff and wine we’d picked up previously.
Meanwhile, I haven’t had a chance to check out the Bloglines backlog … it’s looking rather scary at the moment – up into triple
figures by now. Eep!

I have no idea what beer costs here, I’ve never bought a pint.

My husband loved Barcelona, and he especially loved the Gaudi buildings, modernist architect that he was. I’m glad you guys had such fun, in such a beautiful city.
And I hope that the wee beasties will lay off the pee wars, now that they’ve got the sass scared out of them that you’d abandoned them maybe for good!

Sounds great, Az! We’re going to hike the Grand Canyon for my 50th — even though the birthday is next month (one month from today, in fact) and the hike is next fall. Long story. Anyway, seemed like a good thing to do for one’s 50th (get off the couch).

The Gaudi buildings were our favourite, too, but we also enjoy just strolling around, finding things like the cat sculpture and litle views down side streets. The old city and the more modern avenues and streets that surround it are quite different in character, so there’s something for everyone.
Oh, and the food was damn good too!

I’m so glad you had a wonderful birthday. Barcelona was featured recently on a Travel Channel program. The woman who made the program said it is her favorite city in Europe. Hope I’m able to visit it someday.

Just finished off the Syrian pastries … nice variations on the arabic ones we get here. Instead of just pistachios and walnuts there are also cashew and hazelnut options. Mmmm…
