Do you get them?
Back in November it was suggested that the other “dreich” month of the year was February. Do you agree?
It’s a bit different here in Sevilla because, although it can be a bit rainy in February, it also starts warming up and feeling quite springlike.
What’s February like where you are?

This February is shaping up to be remembered as a glorious thing. We’re getting RAIN, serious RAIN, for the first time in years.
Mind you, February is usually hot as hell so it’s not usually my favourite month.

I’m sure everyone is happy for the rain over there. Are the fires still going?
Rain here is always a welcome thing, or at least that’s what we say.

I’m not aware of any fires burning at the moment, but there’s bound to be some small local ones here and there. (The big ones pretty much ran out of fuel.) The problem with thunderstorms like we’re getting at the moment is that the lightning can start more fires as it goes.
Still, the more it rains, the less chance there is that lightning strikes will cause problems.

I get a tad blah in a couple of winter months, actually — like February AND January! I like March, though, for some reason; probably because it’s when you can really notice the days getting longer, and the air warmer, the birds are singing their little hearts out and the buds are doing their budding-est. 🙂

It’s not quite normal yet – it overshot normality and ended up being weird again, I’m afraid, this time with minor flooding. *shrug*

I’m glad the word ‘dreich’ has spread beyond Scotland (due to the influence of Scots-born BBC meteorologists?). Another good, contemporary Scots word – and this is seldom acknowledged: mingin’.
Yes, February is often the hardest month for me. January, too. It’s an SAD thing. This year – hey – It’s not hit me so bad. January was exceptionally dark and gloomy in weather terms, but it looks like spring is sprung. There’s that feeling of being over the worst.

I remember when I lived in Bristol that the end of February tended to look a bit hopeful because, although it was still constantly grey, that’s when the first daffodils and crocus started popping up. And it was such a lovely and uplifting thing to see.
One of the reasons I live in Spain, and particularly in Andalucia, is because it is sunny almost all the time. And I seriously need sunshine.
Meanwhile, the word ‘dreich’ came from our friend Teuchter in her comment on the ‘November’ blog post linked to above. Great word.
