Clearly aren’t as important as bombs at home. Check these out…

A small sampling of almost daily news reports about innocent civilians being killed by suicide bomb attacks in Iraq.

Are Londoners, New Yorkers, Madrileños somehow more important than Iraqi civilians?

Where are the protests, the displays of public mourning and moral outrage … even the public debate?

50-something Londoners were killed on July 7, 2005 … almost a daily average in Baghdad. How is that we westerners feel comfortable maintaining this obvious double standard?

Yes, I agree, it always amazes me when national TV news in the UK would run something like “Brown plans change to tax law” as their top news story ahead of “12 die in roadside bomb in Baghdad”. Especially since we are actually actively involved in that country.

Because we are arrogant and self-righteous, as societies. That kind of insensitivity is what allows us to wage war in the first place.

A friend of mine was commenting today on the fact that the US has not formally declared war (per the US constitution) since WWII. The fact that we are AT WAR doesn’t seem to count. 😕

My guess is that media organisations do it because, in order to make money, they follow what most people are interested in, and not what is objectively important or more newsworthy.

When we hear, day after day, that someone has walked into yet another bazaar in Iraq and blown himself and half the people there to kingdom come, it’s us who get turned off. We are the people flicking the switches over to Big Brother and the X-Factor. The marketing organisations realise that, so they follow what we do.

I don’t even begin to understand how this got so prevalent, and how to stop it.

I realize it’s a protest against the invaders (U.S.), but I really find myself wondering if it will stop once we’re gone? It’s devastatingly effective in disrupting *everything*. Sort of a “If I can’t have XXX, no one can!” 😕

More than 150 dead in Iraq blasts

In the deadliest incident, some 115 people were killed in a car bombing in a food market in Sadriya district.

Car and suicide bombings have occurred almost daily in Baghdad in recent months, despite a US-led security crackdown since February.

[this is the third update today – it started off as 50 dead, then 80 and now more than 150]

Car bomb explodes in Iraqi city

At least 16 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a suicide car bomb attack in the southern Iraqi town of Kufa, officials said.

The explosion destroyed a restaurant and severely damaged shops in an open-air market, about 400m from the town’s main mosque.

Bombings leave many dead in Iraq

At least 45 people have been killed and dozens wounded by a suicide truck bombing in the northern Iraqi town of Makhmur, police said.

The bomber crashed his truck into the offices of a leading Kurdish party, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, where a meeting was being held at the time.

Bomb devastates market in Baghdad

A car bomb has killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens more in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, police say.

The bomb exploded in an outdoor market in the mainly Shia Amil district, in the south-west of the city.

Many of those killed and wounded were women and children, medical and military officials said.

Baghdad truck bomb kills dozens

At least 75 people have been killed and another 190 injured in a truck bomb attack near a Shia mosque in the centre of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The massive explosion in the busy Sinak commercial district destroyed part of the al-Khilani mosque and sent large clouds of black smoke into the air.

It was the latest in a series of recent attacks on Shia and Sunni mosques.

A car bomb has killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens more in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, police said.
The bomb was left in a parked car at a bus terminal in the mainly Shia district of Bayaa in south-west Baghdad, officials said.
The explosion tore through crowds of commuters waiting for buses during the morning rush hour, police said.

Iraq market truck bomb kills 105

A deadly truck bombing in a busy market in northern Iraq has killed 105 people and injured 240, police say.

The morning blast destroyed the market in the small town of Amirli, south of Kirkuk, killing many people instantly and trapping dozens among the rubble.

Fears over rising Iraq bomb toll

Rescuers searching the devastated scene of a multiple bomb attack in northern Iraq fear another 200 people could be buried under rubble.

The governor of Tal Afar told the BBC the current toll of 250 dead and 350 injured was expected to rise sharply

Twin bombs kill scores in Baghdad

More than 70 people have been killed by two bombs in Baghdad, attached to two mentally disabled women and detonated remotely, says a security official.

“The al-Qaeda terrorists and criminals are proud of this method,” Brig Qassem Ata al-Moussawi told the BBC.

ISLAMABAD—Eighty-seven people were killed and 114 wounded at an open-air market in Islamabad yesterday in one of the worst ruckuses to hit the Pakistani capital in years. Witnesses said that the bloody to-do occurred shortly before noontime prayers, and that dozens were instantly killed by the doozy of a shockwave. Many more were reportedly trampled to death in the rush to escape the foofaraw.

Toxic world fallout from Iraq invasion

The war in Iraq was supposed to be over long before now.

It was not supposed to provoke a conflict between Sunni and Shia or stir up an al-Qaeda hornet’s nest.

Nor was it supposed to alienate much of the rest of the world from US foreign policy, which post 9/11 was on the crest of a wave of sympathy.

It was intended, its proponents argued, to remove a threat to world peace and to plant the flag of freedom in a Middle East democratic desert.

Fucking oil, eh?

Iraq bomber kills many at funeral

Iraqi police say a suicide bomber has killed at least 15 people in an attack on a funeral procession in the province of Diyala.

The attack, on the funeral for a Sunni policeman, happened in the town of Saadiyah, 60km from Baquba.

Dozens dead as Iraq cities bombed

More than 70 people have been killed in blasts at three cities in Iraq, in one of the deadliest days there for weeks.

At least 53 died and another 90 were injured when explosives packed in a bus detonated outside a restaurant near a court in Baquba, north of the capital.

And 13 more were killed in a suicide bombing at a kebab restaurant where policemen were eating in Ramadi, which had seen a sharp decline in violence.

Three people were also killed in Mosul in the north, and another in Baghdad.
