And who can resist Gene Kelly singing in the rain?
To be honest, I found Fiddler on The Roof a bit long, but this one song made it all worthwhile, especially when Topol shakes his arms about and stamps his feet – love that bit!
I sort of hate to admit that one of my favorite movie musicals is Mary Poppins. First of all, you have to love a movie where the opening song and dance numbers is “Well Done, Sister Suffragettes!” Anyway, I can sing along with all the tunes in this one. “With tuppence for paper and string, you can have your own set of wings, with your feet on the ground your a bird in flight, with your fist holding tight, to the string of your kite!” Gotta love it.
And who can resist Gene Kelly singing in the rain?
I’m with you on that one. I loved that movie. And I loved Gene Kelly in it. Oh, that smile he had. It can make me melt.
Despite the risk of the usual razzing I get when I say I like 50’s Musicals, I like Showboat, Brigadoon and Singin’ In the Rain the best of all of them.
“Make ’em laugh. Make ’em laugh.
Don’t you know everyone wants to laugh.”

West Side Story is also a personal favourite. I’ve never seen Hair, though I know the soundtrack, and only saw Oliver a couple of years ago.
The thing about musicals is that so often they are just kind of cringe-making when people burst into song for no particular reason.
But when it works, it really works well. 🙂
