They’re baaaaack . . .
That is to say I had a very unpleasant surprise last night when I went to put something in the kitchen garbage bin and … gaaaaa!
This really is awful. As I mentioned over here, until a couple of years ago the usual thing was to find one or two of the fuckers over the course of the summer (and usually ‘patas arriba’ thanks to my dearly departed Lua). But then they started showing up during the summer months very much alive and scuttling. Luckily this only started happening after Nog came here to live because I honestly don’t think I could deal with them on my own.
Anyhow, time to get serious about finding some sort of roach killer (other than Nog) that isn’t harmful to cats.
Ewww. Look what I just found.

I know cockroaches are supposed to take over the world one day, but should we be helping them?

I’m not even going to look! I *HATE* roaches…
Those you’ve got there, I believe you mentioned seeing them fly? Them’s palmetto bugs, then. A prime reason I will *never* visit Florida or the deep, dark, Gulf coast. Houston’s got them in spades, too. Horror on steroids.

I’ve never understood why those huge flying roaches are called palmetto bugs. A roach by any other name is still disgusting.
The scientific name for them is Periplaneta americana (Linnaeus) and they are commonly known as American Cockroaches. So, why ‘palmetto’?

They could be named for the city of Palmetto, or more probably for the palmetto tree.

Yeah but … why?

Nog has the prize, it is for the palmetto tree, actually a palm, I believe. They’re also the reason that Tupperware won’t guarantee their stuff in Florida — palmetto bugs can get right through it. 1, 2, 3, all together now……GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
they’re just a sign that Ghod doesn’t always make good decisions…they FLY in the spring, but they’re ugly ALL the time!
