. . . we had bought the IKEA sofa cover?
As I mentioned over here, we didn’t buy it in the end because it looked too big to fit into the washing machine. And so we decided to use the same cotton throw we’d had on the old sofa, which was no problem as it looked fine and did the same job. But then we had to get that quilted waterproof mattress cover as well (what if there had never been any ‘pee wars’?) which now means that the cotton throw doesn’t tuck into the overlap where the top bit of the mattress folds over onto the bottom bit (see photo). This means that it needs ‘smoothing down’ and arranging after someone has been sitting on it. And Sunday evening was no exception after Nog had been sitting on it for ages with his laptop …
Well, except that I was in a hurry as dinner was almost ready and forgot about the ‘no longer tucks in’ thing, so when I gave the cover a shove with my fingertips to tuck it under the overlap the middle finger on my left hand went aaaaaaarrgh!!! I thought for a moment that I’d broken it because the last joint was just kind of hanging there and I couldn’t get it to move on its own. Still, other than hurting like fuck, I decided it was probably just badly sprained and bruised and would feel better in the morning.
Nope. Woke up yesterday morning to the same whole-load-o’-pain thing happening, which made going to yoga class a bit more challenging than usual. Later on I decided to get my hair cut (big time success story there – more on that elsewhere) and then I thought it might be a good idea to stop by my doctor-friend Agustín’s office, thinking he’d tape the thing up for me and that would be that. Instead he told me to get down to hospital emergency immediately for an x-ray!
Three hours later (most of which spent in various waiting rooms with various other ‘impatients’ like myself) I’d been in to see the doctor, had my beautiful ‘moebius strip’ silver ring cut off
(my finger was way too swollen to pull it off), been x-rayed and then back to see the doc again, who told me that there were no broken bones. Which it turned out wasn’t good news. Because it turned out that my tendon was severed at the first knuckle joint.
So then I had to wait more than 2 hours to see the plastic surgeon, who scheduled emergency surgery for that evening, saying that even after 24 hours it might not be possible to reattach the tendon (eep!).
Having yet more time to kill I thought I should get a snack of something as I realised I hadn’t eaten anything since a bit of plain yoghurt & coffee about 10 o’clock. So I popped over to a nearby little montadito bar for a little montadito (what else?). Oh, and also 2 glasses of very nice and much needed Montecillo rioja.
Finally, at about 9.30pm (I’d first gone to emergency at 1.30) I had the op done, which took about an hour. Local anaesthetic. The tendon was stitched back together and a pin was also stuck in to keep the joint straight while it heals. And then the semi-cast and huge bandage! I had actually thought that just the finger would be somehow immobilised and I’d be able to go about my business more or less the same as usual, but apparently I’ve got to wear this fucker for about two weeks! And keep it elevated above my heart at all times, even while sleeping. The net sling is actually quite a good idea as it’s stretchy and easier on the neck.
And that’s basically the story. Oh, gory details iclude the surgeon insisting I ‘have a look’ a couple of times during the op. So now I know what my finger tendons and knuckle bones look like – which is something I think I would have been quite happy living without.
But in an attempt to be somewhat philosophical about all this, it has reminded me how things in our lives can change in a split second and so we should remember to carpe diem as much as possible. Though for the immediate future it looks as though I’ll be spending my diems trying to figure out how to do things one-handed. And all the extra stuff around the house that Nog is going to have to do on his own should remind him to always straighten sofa cover when he gets off it.
Poor darling! *hugs*
Well, see the good things in the misery…
You won’t have to
– wash dishes
– cook
– do laundry
– mop floors
– etc
and you will need
– to be pampered
– served food on regular basis
– be seated in fav chair reading
– etc

I’m actually thinking that if the cooking is left to Nog, dq, then I may finally lose some weight.
And I’m also more concerned about bathing and *doing something with my hair* than the housecleaning. Neither of which I’ve attempted so far today.

Awww – that is not nice. I had a dislocated finger once. But I had a highly skilled nurse/housekeeper/wife to do stuff for me. She then spent the next ten years teaching me what I needed to know about doing stuff for myself. It didn’t work! [said he gazing around the mess on the desk!]
Hope Nog is a faster learner than I was. Get better soon – typing one handed is a pain.

Well, Nog has just gone out to get us some battered prawns and falafels for dinner. And yes, typing one-handed is very frustrating.
I took today off work but will be back to the Real World tomorrow – eep!

If you want to be philosophical, you could reflect that the surgeon, by showing you wha he was doing, has allowed you to contemplate your Inner Self in a very literal way.

And you’ll note that I can’t even type properly with two hands.

Ha! I’m actually getting faster at one-handed typing but it’s weird having to look at the keyboard and not the screen when I type.
Anyhow, finally got my prescription filled for the anti-inflammatory/analgaesic (the pharmacy downstairs had to order it in), so that should help a bit with the pain.
Nog is being very good about helping out – he even ironed a top for me this morning! I can more or less manage a sort of shower with a plastic bag over my cast/bandage thingy, but it’s going to be very interesting when I have to wash my hair tomorrow. Gaaa, all the things we take for granted, eh?
I’m back to teaching today, which meant getting dressed – I could do everything but the bra! (again, Nog to the rescue). It’s so weird being ‘helpless’ with stuff like that but the trick seems to be to give myself twice the amount of time and not rush. But I’d really be lost without Nog’s help so I’m trying my best not to behave like ‘a man with a cold’ 😉
This morning I stopped by my gym and they’re going to give me ‘two weeks off’ so I won’t have to pay again until the middle of June (instead of the 1st) so that’s good news.
And tomorrow I have to go back to the hospital to get my finger looked at and I suppose get the bandage changed. *sigh*
Meanwhile, great timing with the new TV (and also the boxed DVD set of the first season of House that we’d picked up at FNAC last weekend). And my tenants next door are also thrilled with their ‘new’ 21-inch TV. So I’m off to hang out on the sofa for the rest of the afternoon until my evening classes start.
Thanks for all your replies and good wishes (and special thanks to Teuchter for the phone call yesterday! *hug*). Means a lot, guys.

I was about to email and ask if you had surgery…question answered. Wow. Sorry. I broke my right wrist in high school so I kind of know what you’re going through – I had to learn button left handed, the showering with a bag over the cast. I tried writing left handed, but it ended up being easier just to write with my cast hand.
I hope you have a really, really, really speedy recovery!

Thanks Arnie. Yeah, I’m lucky it’s my left hand and not my right one.
Meanwhile, totally wimped out of my two evening classes – though I did the morning ones at home okay.
Nog says I shouldn’t feel badly, well except maybe for the lost income. And in fact, the surgeon asked if I wanted him to give me a paper so I could take time off work (he didn’t know I’m self employed). So maybe a bit of time off after something like this is normal?
But just the thought of getting dressed again this evening … it was hard enough the first time this morning. After I got back from talking to the guys at the the gym and a bit of supermarket shopping I got straight back into my comfy nightdress.
And tomorrow I have two students ‘missing’ as the’ve gone to Glasgow for the UEFA cup final. Just as well.

Yes, good timing with the new TV and House episodes.
I broke my right arm once, and not only was it very painful, but I am right-handed so everything was supremely difficult for 6 weeks. In the same accident, I also sprained my right ankle, so I was basically housebound as using crutches was out. I got pampered a bit by friends and family and rented a lot of movies.

Okay, now I am seriously feeling wimpy for having taken one-and-a-bit days off work for just a severed finger tendon.

Oh good heavens. I leave for a few days and look what happens! I am so sorry to hear about your accident. And I love what you said about “carpe diem,” you are so right that it is important to treasure each moment. You never know.
the reason that the Dr. had to immobilize your whole forearm is because the muscle that is connected to that severed tendon is attached up there about 2 inches below your elbow. Most of us are not so well trained that we can isolate one muscle up there, so rather than have you accidentally contract the injured muscle, he has made it so you won’t contract any of them.
Get better soon.

az, that’ll larn ya — let Nog straigten the cover next time! And hang in there; there’s a silver lining to every cloud, you’ll get very good typing with one hand!
That is a fetching dress, sling and all. 🙂
Have they told you yet if you’ll have to have physical therapy for your finger, to keep the tendon limber?

I’m quite sure it wasn’t fun at all, WC – that was just my rather dry & sarky sense of humour.
Yeah, I reckoned it was something like that, hmh, especially when it started hurting up my forearm as well.
Anyhow, I’m feeling much less wimpy today. Managed to wash my hair and got Nog to help me as I wielded the straightening iron. The result was a bit wonky but still better than I could have managed on my own. Also I’m sure lucky I got it cut just before going to see Agustin on Monday, otherwise I would have had to resort to A HAT.
I’m going in for my checkup this afternoon, SC, so not sure yrt what sort of ‘after treatment’ stuff might be required. I do want to get the net sling thing changed though, as it’s looking a bit grubby – think I’ll ask them for a couple metres of the stuff so I can change them myself at home.

Those avocado stones are tricky wee blighters – had a couple of near misses with them too.
Look away now if you’re easily disgusted……
I once managed to cut my finger through to the bone – a careless cooking axterdint.
I bound it up as tight as I could and sat down to join the family at the table. A few minutes later I noticed the cat sitting beneath my feet, lapping up the dripping blood quite happily.
Ah well – at least it wasn’t wasted and didn’t stain the carpet 😀

Avocado-related hand injuries, Edward? Do tell.
So the check-up went well, except I didn’t realise that the pin, which has to stay in for about three weeks, was left sricking out of my fingertip a bit (for easy removal, I guess). Looks weird though.
My finger still looks like a chorizo – I don’t suppose the heat is helping with the swelling (or rather, it is helping, depending on how you look at it).
Anyhow, I’m supposed to see the surgeon again next Wednesday but will have to back to emergency on Sunday to have the bandages changed again. We’ve decided to go for a nice lunch in Triana first and make it more of a pleasant outing. In fact we want to go back to the place we stopped at on our way home from the hospital last Monday. Fabulous tapas and really cheap – I’ll bring along the camera this time.
And apparently I will probably need some physical therapy afterwards … heck, even after a few days my pinky was rather painful to bend and I was told all of my fingers are going to stiffen up from being immobilised for so long. *sigh*
So it looks like quite a few more trips to the hospital lie ahead, but I should be able to schedule them so I won’t have to miss any more work. And it’s quite a nice walk there over the river – about 40 minutes from home. Teuchter, I have to cross the ‘Eiffel’ bridge and it’s about 15 minutes down the main street in Triana from there.
Anyhoodle, I seem to be adjusting now and was fine teaching my evening classes today when I got back from the hospital.
One day at a time . . . and starting tomorrow I’m going to be watching House on the BIG SCREEN from my excercise bike rather than the sofa. 🙂

That’s the truth! What is it about this assemble-it-yourself furniture; I’ve gotten in trouble with putting them together from time to time. I’ve got a shelf unit for my dining room waiting for me to have the energy to put it together (and it’s been waiting since I got sick last year!!)! I’ll be *very* careful… 🙂

The avocado-related injury is quite common, apparently.
The correct way to remove the stone from a halved avocado is to lay it on a worktop, give the stone a sharp thwack with a knife blade so that it is embedded, then twist.
The incorrect way is to hold the halved avocado in one hand and stick the knifepoint in with the other.
You can imagine the rest.

Yes I can … ouch! So was it because you never actually believed it had happened the first two times that it happened again? I always scoop the stone out with a spoon, myself. Easy peasy.
Then again, I apparently practice Ikea-kwon-do on my sofa (good one, truce! 🙂 ) so who am I to talk?

It’s 34º … I think I got extra bandaging yesterday because even putting one of those blue freezer-pac thingys between the net covering and the bandage doesn’t seem to be cooling things down at all. It feels like all my fingers are about to explode, but the damaged one is throbbing the most. Maybe I should remove the gauze, cotton wool and elastic bandage stuff for awhile? If I make sure to stay very still?

Well that wasn’t worth getting dressed for. Went down to emergency as instructed by my doctor, who said I should get the bandage changed about every 3 days, especially in this heat. But the intern there just cut open the bandage a bit over the finger, dabbed on a bit of alcohol on the stitches and taped it back up.
So I told him that I wanted a whole fresh bandage and he refused, saying that this was how he did things. Meanwhile, my hand has been sweating into the same cotton wool under the stripy bandage since Thursday and it’s also got a bit bunched up under my fingers … oh, I feel so angry and frustrated! I’d been so looking forward to some air on my hand, even for just a few minutes. And a clean bandage.
My next appointment with the surgeon isn’t until Wednesday. Grrr…

That sucks. That’s seems to happen everywhere in modern medicine – the person you’re talking to at that instant is the *absolute* expert and everyone else (regardless of training/experience) must be wrong. so all previous orders are automatically dismissed. Bunch of arrogant assholes…

Well, I was going to stop by Agustín’s office yesterday – a public health centre – to get the bandage changed properly. But then I decided to just wait for my appointment with the surgeon on Wednesday. Now I wish I had gone as there is a definite odour wafting out of the thumb hole in the bandage, reminiscent of socks worn for too long. *ick*
At least it’s not hurting as much as it was yesterday – I was starting to worry that I’d done something to hurt the tendon again.
Looking on the bright side *whistle smiley*, I wondered about what sort of life lesson might have been necessary for me to learn right now, thinking about the kind of stuff that has surfaced as a result of this accident. As in, what have I been avoiding that being in this state is becoming very obvious to me? And that’s been very interesting …

Just back from the doctor’s. He didn’t understand why the intern wouldn’t change my bandage either. So he was extra nice and afte removing the old net sling, bandage and cotton wool, gave my forearm and hand a lovely wash with antiseptic soap-gel and then just let it sit under the cool running water for a minute. Heaven! And it took all of 7 minutes.
Anyhow, he says the finger is healing well so I can probably leave it now until Monday – that way I can see him again and not have to go back to emergency. Then next Thursday I should be able to get the pin taken out, at which point I’ll ‘graduate’ to a slip-on plastic finger cover.
So just one more week with the bandage and semi-cast thing.

And now just three days to go!
I went to get the bandage changed again today – it’s slighly less ‘bundled up’ than before, which is at least a bit cooler. I also got the stitches taken out and the pin comes out on Thursday (eep!).
On the way home I picked up my plastic finger thingy at an orthopaedic shop and was shocked that it cost 15 euros!
Oh well. Best not to think about what this has cost me, what with doctor visits, missed classes, meds and whatnot.
