Well hey, they won again!
And normally I wouldn’t give a flying except, just like last year when Sevilla won the UEFA Cup, it seems I will be kept awake all night, and possibly for several nights running, by revellers out revelling and constantly singing the *Team Song* that grates like a grating thing . . .
To be fair, the Sevilla fans are pretty much a decent bunch, but when I woke up this morning (the match was last night in Glasgow) I thought – oh thank gawd they didn’t win. Since the entire night had passed without incident – like no stupid songs being sung off-key. But apparently the fans were waiting for the team to come home today to show their appreciation properly. Gaaaaa!
Anyhow, just gone midnight and they’re all still out there …
Poor you.
Hooligans… erm…fans can be quite disturbing…

Shame it’s still pissing down in Glasgow. It was torrential this morning.
Holligans, you say, dq? Why hooligans? Certainly in Glasgow it was just a load of Spanish people having a good time. I speak as someone who has no interest in football, but I can say that it added a wonderful atmosphere to the city, without a hint of menace. Yes, there were some young (Scottish) teens on my evening train painted in Spanish team colours and acting more boisterously than usual, but it was harmless fun.

A) I don’t like football “soccer”
B) I don’t like sports anyhow
C) I think it’s ridiculous that supposedly grown up (male) persons dress themselves in certain colours and then beat the hell out of anyone that don’t do likewise.
D) I do know there are levels in Hell, but I’m sure sports fans occupy most of them
…and I’m happy when “my” national team loses in tournaments. That usually means it’s safe to have coffee in the staff lounge again…

No, not hooligans at all, dq. It’s actually THIS DAMN SONG that drives me mental. They were singing it until the wee hours; today delivery men are whistling it, random pedestrians are humming it, car stereos are blasting it, people even have it as the ring tone on their mobile phones … gaaaaa!
Hence the title of this post. Oh, and if you can make it to the end of the video clip, try to imagine that ‘oooh,oh,ohh, oooooohhh!’ being sung off-key all night long.

Well, yes, I sympathise with the coffee lounge thing. In my part of the world, it’s difficult to hold a conversation in a pub if you don’t know/care anything about football. I mean, statements such as “What about contemporary art?” don’t go down well.
But there isn’t always violence involved – and there wasn’t last Wednesday.
Having said that, the ‘rivalry’ between protestant Rangers and catholic Celtic does often spill over into murder. And even at the level of banter, it’s damned uncomfortable knowing which of one’s associates belongs to which faith.

However, I’ve got this feeling that soccer team/faith/abortions/animal rights etc is far too often just an excuse for beating the hell out of another human being.
In my northern hometown there was the same core of young hooligans messing around several years, but the foucus of their hatred varied. One year they burned the lorries owned by the local butchery. Next year they smashed windows at shops selling paper with scantly clad women. The third year the built a small camp at a common next door to the home of one of the local scientists they didn’t fancy.
Then they grew older. Some moved out of town, others found new ways of handling their frustration and the rest are seldom seen anymore.
When I was young many called themselves communists, burned flags and assaulted women who dared to claim they were equals.
My point is that there are always a group of young frustrated people with obvioulsy no good ways/manners/means to handle their anger and angst in a less (self) destructive way.

Yes, but did they sing?! 😉

Speaking obviously as a hooligan, I was delighted for Sevilla and am still hoping that they can pull a miracle La Liga title out of the bag as well this year. (Though of course my true sympathies lie with Betis, who look like they will just about scrap through again this year without being relagated.)
And the Sevilla/Espanyol UEFA cup final was a much better game than any of the big domestic finals in the UK this year, and a sight more entertaining than the Champions League final, though one always like to see Scousers crying. 🙂
Viva la Liga!
