Losing my Star Wars virginity.
It’s 30 years since the release of sci-fi classic Star Wars, considered by many to be among the greatest films of all-time.
But what would it be like to watch it now, for the first time?
BBC News entertainment reporter Kevin Young’s sole exposure to science-fiction to date consists of lusting after Gillian Anderson in The X-Files for a while in the 1990s.
Despite fearing it was two hours of his life he’d “never get back”, he offered to lose his Star Wars virginity.
I find it hard to believe that a BBC News entertainment reporter could be considered a true Star Wars virgin – even if he had never seen the film he must have known the basic storyline. I’ve seen the original trilogy so many times that I can’t remember how it felt seeing it for the first time. Though I do remember having a panic attack at the cinema watcing a scene with Darth Vader and the Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back.
Do you remember how it felt being a Star Wars virgin?

~ spoiler alert warning for those who are true virgins ~

I was so young when I saw the movies for the first time. They had captured my imagination like nothing else. I remember going to see Return of the Jedi in the theatre…I was in grade 3, I think. It was a really big deal because I came from such a small town and we rarely went to the theatre. As it happened, I was in Toronto at the time and my aunt and uncle took my brother and me. I remember being awed at the size of the theatre and the screen and just generally having the time of my life.

Noooo waayyyyy, T!!! Get thee to a video rental place and then we’ll talk HAIR. And you’ll love the dialogue.
Wow, WC, do you remember the name of the theatre?

Az: no, though it was in a mall…Probably the Burlington Mall, not actually in T.O.

I am not a complete Star Wars virgin, although I have never seen Revenge of the Sith. I just got tired of all the melodrama. I’m not much of a movie goer, anyway.

Revenge of the Sith was part of the prequel trilogy, which in my opinion was was horrible – all three of them.
To quote Metro on Archie’s blog post…
Basically, what Lucas didn’t have was the advice and guidance of his old friend, the eminent mythologist Joseph Campbell, for the prequels. And I believe Lucas also wrote the screenplays, which was a huge mistake. Not many directors are also good writers.
But the original Star Wars trilogy has a wonderful storyline based on typical mythological themes and also a very good scriptwriter who knew how to write snappy dialogue.

I watched the both “middle ones” last weekend – “the empire strikes back” and “the war of the clones”.
Special effects have evolved… and the lack of continuity was a little annoying. In #5 (made first) Obi-Wan fears that the dark side will have the final win if Luke dies facing Darth Vader. Yoda then tells him about Leia being Luke’s twin.
In #3 (made later) Obi-Wan is one of the decision makers when Luke and Leia are put in the care of their respective foster parents.
Guess it can be tricky to write the prequels…
Sometimes both pre- and sequels better be avoided. Yesterday I and the both youngest hatchlings watched the third installment of Disney’s latest pirate feature. I was pretty bored the gazillionth time the monkey flew away on a piece of broken wood after yet another big explosion.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen The Empire Strikes Back, but I recall that scene as Yoda reminding ObiWan about this, referring to ‘the other’ or ‘another’. Though I admit to being a bit fuzzy about that.
As for Pirates of The Caribbean, I thought the second one was awfully weak in the ol’ storyline department. But as I never tire of watching ‘The Deppster’ and I’m really curious to see Keith Richards playing his father, I’ll probably end up watching the third film (on dvd, as I doubt it will be shown here at the cinema in the original language version).

The first film was probably the best but I have enjoyed them all.
