I found this whilst googling around for an entirely unrelated image and it not only made me laugh but it also made me start thinking about what makes someone a ‘true friend’.
What’s your definition of a true friend, good friend, etc…?
Well as long as I’m first, there’s the old chestnut:
“A friend will help you move.
A true friend will help you move a body.”
But I suppose my true friends are the ones who would say:
“Well I would have donated that kidney whether you needed it or not …”

Hmm. Been re-assessing a lot of my ‘friendships’ since we’ve had to deal with Sara’s illness. Let’s just say that some have less than impressed and certainly haven’t given us any reason to re-consider our medium to long term plans to emigrate.
It’s only when you really need them to come through for you that you realise who your real friends are.

I think it’s true that things like serious illnesses and crises do separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
I’ve been fortunate with my physical health so far but I’ve had a few serious personal crises which always ended with me being left short a ‘friend’ or two. And although it hurts at the time I think it’s always better to know where you stand.
In fact, the outing of false friends can actually be a rather liberating experience.

And of course a true friend will always tell you when you have spinach stuck in your teeth.

Well, I’ve always trusted my real friends to tell me when I’m making a fool of myself.
Mostly they are pretty good at it.

Really? When’s my turn? 😉
I mostly can’t abide the ones that try and tell you the spinach actually looks good and then scuttle off to tell others “how you’ve fallen” so they can all have a cheap gossipy chortle together, presumably at your expense.
Woodwork squeaks . . .

Hmmm. How about this:
A true friend is one who, when you call them at 2 AM and say “I need forty gallons of diesel fuel, a shovel, seven lemon merangue pies, a small calibre handgun, two albino typists, a case of grapefruit and a vodka,” responds:
“Don’t you mean a case of vodka and a grapefruit?”

LOL at that last one!
When I was ill I certainly found out who my true friends were. And oddly, they weren’t always the ones I would have expected. Some people I hadn’t thought were that close really came through, and some who I thought I could count on turned out to be first in the queue to run for the hills.
Much better off now that I know which are which!
I think a true friend is someone who is genuinely pleased for you when things are going well, rather than jealous.

Yeah, and a fat lot of good you are, Metro. I ASKED for gin.
I was relatively fortunate when I was ill; maybe I was lucky with my friends. It only cost me one, and in retrospect I’m better off rid of her. She was my friend and my landlord, and she actually gave me an eviction notice (under false pretenses, too) while I was still undergoing treatment for cancer and my odds were only 60%.
Who needs “friends” like that?

Yikes! I’ve experienced this sort of “friend” before, rain. This sort of vile behaviour is typical of someone who both admires and despises you, is envious of your talents and accomplishments and basically toadies up to you, waiting for their moment to kick you while you are down.
Yes, it’s much better to be rid of scum like that.

I was amazed at the friends I have, when I was ill. I am (pardon the expression) very blessed in the people in my life, including some of the people here, and other places online. 😀
Maybe it’s good to have life give us the boot once in a while, just to shake the “dust” off…
