Unlike these idiotic inventions, this wine cooler thingy is quite clever. No doubt they’ve been around for years but I only came across this one today by accident – someone had left it at the cashier’s stand where I was paying for something else. And so I had to buy one and try it out (it’s in the freezer as I type). I wonder why restaurants don’t use them instead of ice buckets – they’re much handier.
Anyone else got one?

I can’t tell from the photograph what it’s made of or how it works, but it clearly much smaller than an ice bucket and without the mess.
(It’s still your turn on Scrabulous.)

It’s like those freezer-pac thingys with the blue stuff on the inside, except this is six soft plastic panels that form a circle around the wine bottle. No fuss no muss.
I’ve added a link to a larger photo, you just have to click on the pic.
Tried it out just now when Nog & I were watching A Prairie Home Companion and stuffing our faces on movie snacks (still no Orville’s) … the wine stayed nicely chilled all during the film and nobody (ie. Nog) had to get up to refill our glasses.
My scrabble turn! I thought it was your turn! Okay, I’m on it…

yes I used to have one of those years ago though it was plain silver. guess they hadn’t thought to produce them in appropriate colours or designs then.
if I recall correctly, I gave it to my then husband as a present. he was the white wine drinker in the family and liked his tipple to be as cold as possible. he even added ice cubes to his wine glass!

There was a silver adjustable one too, nursemyra, which I guess would come in handy for cava, but it was kind of ugly with the velcro closing and it was also cost twice as much as the other one.
I think they would work great in restaurants and places could have them made up with their logos, etc.

I’ve used a silver one at home for a couple of years now, so I know they work.
But in a restaurant? You must be kidding. Even with a logo and some design work they will look cheap and nasty compared to an ice bucket. It might be convenient but it isn’t classy.

Hi euromarque and welcome. 🙂
Though I see that you are not a blogger and have linked back to a site that sells wine. I’ll let it go this time. 😉
Yeah, I also thought the silver ones looked a bit ‘utilitarian’, and okay, kinda ugly. And although the one I purchased isn’t classy looking, the grapes on it look okay to me – especially for use at home. Cute kitch.
I agree that in a posh restaurant with waiters hovering to constantly refill your glass in an elegant manner, that these coolers would probably look out of place. But frankly, these aren’t the sort of places I frequent on a regular basis.
I still think that in your basic restaurant that serves great food but has no pretentions about being ‘classy’ these would go down a treat, not only for the clientelle but also the waiters. Half the time the clientelle end up refilling their glasses anyhow and get water dripping all over the place – and speaking as an ex-waiter, it’s a real pain in the butt having to lug out the damn bucket.
If they can do ‘cute kitch’ designs I’m sure they could also probably do something that would fit into the restaurant decor that wouldn’t look cheap & nasty.

I’ve got one, and smaller ones for “33” sized beer bottles!
The only thing we find is, it is good and convenient for cooling the wine, but tends to warm up and thaw out a bit quicker than we would choose.
