The fruit wagon, that is.

I’d been doing so well, ever since I started eating my fruit purée and was getting my 2-3 servings of fruit a day. Then I went to Tavira, Portugal for a few days last week and somehow ended up substituting bread for fruit… 😕

But I honestly couldn’t help it – have you ever had Portuguese bread? It is truly amazing stuff. Of course there are many different kinds, but what’s known as “broa” tends to be the most common type served in restaurants.

It is wonderful toasted for breakfast, stays hot longer than other types of bread and doesn’t go soggy. And it also makes excellent sandwiches.

It is typically served at every meal, usually with cheese and a variety of differently flavoured butters (with herbs, garlic, spices) and other spreads such as sardine or salmon paté.

And along with some local cheese, cured meats and a glass of wine, it makes a very tasty snack or light meal.

So you see, given all the opportunities to eat fabulous Portuguese bread whilst in Tavira, who would have the time – or even the inclination – to eat fruit? Especially as Spanish bread is so insipid and meh. But now the loaf of broa I brought home with me has been devoured eaten and I start a new week in which I shall go back to substituting fruit for bread. f_strawberry.gif
