I’d been doing so well, ever since I started eating my fruit purée and was getting my 2-3 servings of fruit a day. Then I went to Tavira, Portugal for a few days last week and somehow ended up substituting bread for fruit… 😕
But I honestly couldn’t help it – have you ever had Portuguese bread? It is truly amazing stuff. Of course there are many different kinds, but what’s known as “broa” tends to be the most common type served in restaurants.
It is wonderful toasted for breakfast, stays hot longer than other types of bread and doesn’t go soggy. And it also makes excellent sandwiches.
It is typically served at every meal, usually with cheese and a variety of differently flavoured butters (with herbs, garlic, spices) and other spreads such as sardine or salmon paté.
And along with some local cheese, cured meats and a glass of wine, it makes a very tasty snack or light meal.
So you see, given all the opportunities to eat fabulous Portuguese bread whilst in Tavira, who would have the time – or even the inclination – to eat fruit? Especially as Spanish bread is so insipid and meh. But now the loaf of broa I brought home with me has been devoured eaten and I start a new week in which I shall go back to substituting fruit for bread.

ha… reminds me of the time you had lunch with my visiting friend angus and you reported back “what kind of man doesn’t eat bread?”
exactly 🙂

Mmmm, I love good bread. I can see why you’d fill up on the bread. But I’m glad you’ll be getting back to fruit. I’m quite fond of fruit.
Actually, I’m going to Brazil in May, and fruit is the one type of food I’m looking forward to. As a vegetarian, I may well be living off fruit. And bread. Hopefully it will be good bread.

Not only that but he doesn’t drink wine either, nursemyra! Goodness, what strange friends you have… 😉
Yeah, I’m going to have to remember not to look at these pics later on today, daisy and cj.
I suspect they will have similar bread in Brazil, alejna. And they also have pão de queijo (cheese bread) there. I didn’t see any of that in Portugal – probably just as well.

Or Portugal, even…
I’m definitely going to learn some Portuguese before I go back. Just speaking Spanish like Sean Connery doesn’t do the trick.

I love bread, but I have to restrain myself because it gives me a stomach ache if I eat too much (not to mention piling on the pounds).
Those photos look sooooooooooo good 🙂

That Portagee bread sounds fantastic.
Azahar, do you know who Jose Andres is? He’s this Spanish chef with a cooking show who is on TV Monday mights here:

He’s pretty good — we’ve seen maybe four of the programs shown on PBS. Incredibly enthusiastic — and everything he makes has me calling out, “I want some!” which doesn’t happen for me, with all cooking shows.

Wow, that looks like a great series, Ben. I’ve never seen him here but, then again, I never watch Spanish tv.
Have you tried any of the recipes?
