Every since Pip and I went to Tangier & Asilah last February I have been wanting to go back to Morocco. And this past week in particular I have felt Morocco calling me back after seeing two interesting Twitter updates about Marrakech.
First I read about the famous Mamounia Hotel (photo above) selling off its furnishings at an auction this past weekend. They are doing renovations and are planning to reopen in September. And then I saw that RyanAir was offering round trip tickets Sevilla-Marrakech (6-13 July) for 8 euros! I almost wept with frustrated desire. But oh well.
Other than the fact that I have no income and no bank balance at the moment, I reckoned that July probably wasn’t the best time to visit Marrakech. Plus, I don’t think going to Africa while on chemo would be the wisest move. But I am definitely going to keep an eye on RyanAir offers for when I am better (both physically & financially). Perhaps October?

I do hope you get there, and share with us. I’ve never been beyond the borders of North America. To me, Morocco is colors, textures, textiles, spice, and intrigue.

They are having another auction in June… Perhaps things will change by then. I would LOVE to go to Morocco.

Exactly! Hey, pretty good for someone who’s never been there, Anne. And the streets also smell wonderful. A combination of spices and baking bread.

Not actually interested in the auction, Mudhooks. I’d much rather see the Mamounia after it reopens. So October would probably be ideal. My friend Agustín (aka Dr A and guspemar) has had tea at the Mamounia and said it was wonderful.

only 8 euros? That is such a deal. I wonder if we have Ryanair here in the US. Probably not. I’m not thinking about travel right now, with the downturn in my business I’m thinking about how to make ends meet. So far it’s okay, though. But Morocco is right out of the question.

Well that would certainly be tempting, though I’d watch Ryanair’s actual destination. They have a nasty habit of using disused military airbases which are actually nowhere near the advertised airport.
A friend of mine once flew to Germany only to find the actual destination was closer to the UK than it was the advertised ‘destination’ airport.

To be honest, I’ve never heard anything but horror stories about RyanAir, Steve. I also don’t think I could pack for a whole week with just one carry on. And you just know they will end up finding ways to add on to the 8 euro price.
But Marrakech is sooooo tempting … I even love just saying the name.

Ryanair have their uses. Their Stansted-Sevilla flight is very useful. And I don’t have a problem with the one handheld bag for a week.
But of course, that Stansted-Sevilla flight is sold to a lot of people as Stansted-Malaga.

*sigh* I would be happy to get to Bellingham again. Vancouver would put me over the moon, and I would probably die of happiness if I got to Victoria. I can’t imagine going someplace as exotic as Morocco. I hop you get to go back when you are feeling better, and that something happens to make life financially easier.

Thing is, Morocco is probably about as close to me as Vancouver is to you, SS. Yes, I think you would love Victoria – have you been there before?
I reckon once the summer (and chemo) is over – when I hope to be enjoying a nice long remission – it’ll be much easier to get it together work-wise. In July-August Seville is pretty much a ghost town.
