A couple of days ago I got a call from my friend Paloma telling me she’d just arrived in Zahara and was going to be here for awhile so we should get together. I met Paloma through Agustín and she was also my student for awhile. She’s a bit older than me and is the mother of my favourite chatterbox, Bosco, who is going to be coming to Zahara today. But I am getting ahead of myself…
Yesterday evening I got a call from Paloma asking if I wanted to meet for a cervecita, and of course I said yes. I was particularly interested in going to a nearby rooftop bar to watch the sun set whilst enjoying a cocktail, so that’s where we went (I’m totally comfortable going out to eat alone, but going to a bar alone … not so much). And it was lovely. I not only got to enjoy the sunset, but it was the first time I’d actually talked to someone in person, other than waiters, since last Friday. And we had a great time. I hadn’t seen Paloma in ages and it was great to catch up and also just hang out together.
Of course, after our cocktails, Paloma made me go out and eat fabulous seafood with her. We went to a place next to the rooftop bar and had some very tender & crispy fried calamares as well as some grilled tuna with tomatoes. And talked and talked and talked.
Bosco called while we were having our cocktails and said he wanted to get together with me too. And today I might go into the village with Paloma (in her car) as she has stuff to do there. As I discovered on Monday, doing that walk in the midday sun is NOT fun. Afterwards she is going to come over and help me with Mini, because I’ve been having a terrible time trying to clean her eyes … they are all infected and full of pus and I’m supposed to clean them every day and give her eye drops, but the darn thing just won’t let me. Mini may be small but when she doesn’t want to be held she squirms around almost as well as Azar (aka Tasmanian Devil), and so I will really appreciate Paloma’s help with that.
So it seems that I am no longer on holiday ALONE. 🙂

hurrah for fun company! (and for help with squirming four-legged friends) 🙂

Good that you are not alone. Funny how your need was met so beautifully and perfectly; I seem to recall a smidgen of fear and vulnerability, and all of a sudden there are compadres appearing.
I’m glad. I’ve decided to try a Solitude Retreat this sunday since Jim is going to be gone and I have nothing on my agenda. All the reading I did about it was intriguing.

Well, I did actually get used to the being alone thing after awhile, but it is also very nice to have a friend just down the road. I know I could call Guillermo & Pepe, and Fina, and Charo … but I don’t really know them that well. Paloma is a “known entity” and also a very comfortable person to be around.
Nog might come out tomorrow morning on the bus and then go back to Seville on Sunday. Just a 24-hour quick trip, but I don’t want the cats left alone for more than one night, especially as Sunny is still having some “poo problems“. But Nog seems quite keen to see Zahara and has even promised to buy me lunch! It all kinda hinges on how Sunny’s morning dump looks tomorrow…
Hey BB, the ancestry thing sounds quite interesting. So yes, will drop you an email soon.
Can one really do a Solitary Retreat in one’s own home, hmh? Look forward to your blog post on that.
Paloma called me while I was out bathing my feet in the sea this morning and said she wasn’t going into the village after all but would come over and help me with Mini. Which she just did. What a help that was! Poor Mini. Her eyes were a mess, but it was definitely a two-person job to get her cleaned up.
And now the daily dilemma. Where to go for lunch …?
