Build it and they will come…
So remember back in March when the fabulous Sexy Beast developed a crack in her casing and had to go into computer hospital for over a month, which resulted in me buying Shadow as a back-up computer, because I couldn’t be left unconnected at home? Well, ever since SB came back it seemed to me that she was running very slowly, especially compared to Shadow. So she has been somewhat neglected. Until now…
While SB was in hospital I had asked about getting her RAM and HD memory increased, and was told it would cost about 90 euros, so I decided not to bother. Meanwhile, I got very used to having Shadow on my lap, either in bed or on the comfy chair. He is like a little work-horse. All rammed up (4GBs) and with more hard-drive memory than I’ll ever need. So he is not only compact (15.4″ screen) but also very speedy.
But then I was told by my geek friends on h2g2 that in order to increase speed it really wasn’t necessary to put in a bigger HD; that by doubling the RAM (from 1 to 2 GBs) I would notice a considerable difference in overall performance… and it would only cost me 30 euros! So that’s what I decided to do and this past week I’ve been getting SB all set up so that we can both get back to work.Β You see, the SB set-up is that she is on the little Ikea desk, with a normal mouse and keyboard attached, which makes working for long stretches much more pleasant (the laptop keyboard and touchpad mouse drive me nuts). It’s also better for my posture to be sitting upright in a proper wheelie chair. And the 17″ screen is easier on my eyes.
And so, things feel balanced again. I still use Shadow when I’m curled up in bed or in the comfy chair, mostly to check emails and Twitter, or to read texts … but when I need to really focus and get proper work done, my gorgeous Sexy Beast is now back in operation and as quick and agile as when I first bought her.
So I am now all set up and ready to work again.
Did you hear that, universe?

I hear you – and I am terrified!

I’m with you on working on a desktop vs working on a laptop.
One is for work, the other is more for fun or portability if you need it.
Touchpads make me crazy if I have to be on them for very long.
Glad you didn’t give up on the old girl!

I’m telling ya, it’s an amazing difference. When I have Shadow on my lap it all feels very casual and is great for doing Twitter stuff, reading emails, etc. But it’s not a good way for me to work.
When I sit down at the desk, in my new wheelie chair (thanks again, Susan!), even the different posture helps me focus better. Also, SB is hooked up to the keyboard, mouse and second monitor, so moving her around is a bit of a nuisance, which makes having Shadow as a backup a real treat. Plus he is easier to take on trips, being smaller and lighter.
But at the moment I feel a bit like I’m all dressed up with nowhere to go…
