Nice piece of work. There are several assumptions made here about what lies ‘through’ or ‘behind’ the work, and in some ways, it doesn’t matter if those assumptions are correct or not – it is lovely.

I saw Guernica a couple times when it hung in NYC. The first time it stopped me in my tracks. I knew the painting from photos but they didn’t begin to do justice to the work. I hadn’t conceptualized how big it is at all. It’s a very powerful painting for me.
I had trouble watching this video. It seemed to me that making it 3D was such as strange response to the painting, Was that supposed to be an interpretation of what Picasso meant by his painterly approach? I think Picasso painted the picture exactly as he imagined it, exactly as he wanted it. If he had wanted the painting to be a bunch of 3D objects, I’m sure he would have painted it that way. It seems as if the person who made the video was saying I can make this painting better or somehow more meaningful or powerful to you by messing about with the images. I see from your comments that your viewers seem to like the video and I respect that. I just don’t agree.

I had the same reaction first seeing it “in person” at the Reina Sofia in Madrid. It’s right there when you walk into the Picasso room and it’s like BLAM! Breathtaking. Even though I’d seen in in photos countless times, there is nothing that can prepare you for how intense it is when you are standing right in front of it.
You make some good points about the video – I think WeeRascal shares some of your reservations. I took it as her own personal experience of the painting, not as her trying to make changes in order to somehow improve on it. And I quite enjoyed following her journey into an amazing work of art, seeing it through her eyes. So I guess I see the video as a tribute/hommage, and that works for me.

Agreed with az – I don’t think it was trying to make the painting better than the original, just provide an interesting new take. I haven’t seen Guernica in person, but I was initially skeptical before seeing the video, thinking that it was pointless to try to 3Dise a Picasso painting, because part of what he was about was putting 3D into 2D in a unique way. But, the video won me over. It’s not a work of genius like the original, but an interesting idea and it has its own certain something.

To everyone who liked this as much as I did … I agree that the music chosen was perfect. And I enjoyed visiting this painting again through someone else’s eyes.
