It’s Feria week here in Sevilla, which means all but one of my students has cancelled their classes. And tomorrow is a public holiday. So things are a bit slow. Not having my visit with Teuchter to look forward to (she and J would have been here Thursday) is still a bit sad, and I also won’t be needing the use of Manolo’s apartment in Málaga on Saturday. And no yoga this week! Due to illness (Mon) holiday (Wed) and Feria (Fri). Seriously, my gym has cancelled all their classes from Thursday – Saturday for Feria. Only in Sevilla!
Today I am finally feeling better after a rather nasty cold that suddenly hit on Friday afternoon. I haven’t had such a bad cold in years and haven’t felt that sick since I was on chemo. That comparison may seem strange but what struck me was how feeling sick now comes with a lot of emotional baggage, especially to do with feelings of vulnerability. And then I found out that one of the most stalwart members on the Colon Club forum died, which kind of hit me hard. That old “walking time bomb” feeling just never goes away.
But while I am on the mend, poor Azar is still unwell. Not exactly like his last “mystery illness” in that he hasn’t gone all floppy and stopped eating. In fact, he is eating quite a lot. But he is doing the gagging and licking his lips thing again and has been throwing up quite a bit, mostly on the soft furnishings. Makes going to sleep with him on my pillow somewhat unsettling, though he does give enough warning so that the last two nights I’ve been able to grab him and hold his head over the edge of the bed before he heaved. Not great for getting a decent night’s sleep though. Anyhow, wondering whether to take him to the vet’s this afternoon or not. I’m tempted to wait it out another day as it may just be a bad case of hairballs, but tomorrow is a holiday. Advice please!
Been quite enjoying my new part-time job doing the social media thang, but I definitely need more “face time” with my client in order to do what I want with everything I’ve set up, especially as this is a trial month. I personally don’t feel pleased with the content and have a lot of half-done ideas waiting for either approval or more information, but I really want to make it work. I like this person a lot, I like the project and the subject matter. I just hope she allows us time to get a good working routine going.
In other work-related news, got my first (paid) tapas tour coming up next week, and I am also working on a couple of special tasting evenings based on specific foods. And someone who wrote me a Fan Email about Sevilla Tapas the other day offered to hire me to do … something. We just need to figure out what. Not as weird as it may sound, and I quite like this guy so I hope something works out.
How are things going with you?

Colds must be going around. I had a nasty one last week and this is probably the first day I am feeling 100%.
I’m the kind of “cat mommy” who doesn’t go to the vet until absolutely necessary. That’s the way I am with myself as well, so nothing to do with my poor kitty cat. If she’s been throwing up for days I might take her. Only you can know for sure. (Not much help I am).
Congrats on the Tapas tasting gigs. I’ve attended two foodie related tours in Seoul during the past 2 weekend, and loved them.
Enjoyed your post. Take care.

Actually that does help, Nancie. I tend to panic and then feel guilty about not doing enough. He’s been throwing up for about two days, but the last time was about 2.30 this morning (10 hrs ago) so maybe things are settling down. He’s out on the balcony right now soaking up some sun and looking quite peaceful, so I’d hate to put him (well, us) through the emotional stress of a vet visit. And it’s always so bloody expensive – last time, after three visits, blood test and x-ray (and 100 €) she still couldn’t find out what was wrong with him so we tried anti-biotics and force-feeding and that seemed to work. But this time he is still eating, so who knows.
As for colds, I’m more used to them being minor annoyances rather than something that totally whacks me out. I’ve still got stuffed up sinuses and am coughing a lot, but at least this is “doable”. Glad to hear you are feeling better.
Did you post about the foodie tours? I saw the cooking class post from last week, which looked fabulous. Will go back and have a look for the others…

I’d take the cat to the vet.

Shit. Now I feel guilty again…

Dont feel guilty. No point. You will spend money trying to find out what’s wrong and probably won’t. He is an old man. Old men get a bit wibbly round the edges and feel unwell quite a lot. I reckon he’s happier on his balcony. That’s my pen’orth. xx

Well, it’s now been 17 hours since the last time he vomited, and he’s eaten quite a bit today. He’s still gagging now and then, and he does look tired and out of sorts. My instincts say this is somehow related to the last “mystery illness” because of the lip licking thing. But yeah, it doesn’t make sense to bring him to the vet’s and say he puked up for a couple of days but today he hasn’t. If it weren’t a holiday tomorrow I’d feel better about this decision. Well, there are the emergency places if something goes wrong mañana.
He’s now having a post-snack snooze on the bed. On the duvet. If he is going to up-chuck again this would be the moment (based on past experience).

I hope Azar continues to be ‘vomit-free’ and that you’re able to relax and get some sleep to help you recover from your cold. I’d leave him be, though, don’t take him to the vet unless and until a visit would be less bad than the alternative – at the moment it sounds like he had something and it is passing, and he’s not in any distress, so I’d wait and see how he goes.
Good news on the tapas tour and the other fan-job possibility. Way to go Az!
All’s well at this end, thanks. My favourite time of year here in Sydney – Autumn – the skies are still sunny and clear but the temperature is a much more manageable mid-20s celcius and the humidity has lessened greatly. 🙂

Autumn and spring are the best seasons here too, though I prefer spring because of the orange blossom. Best temperatures, that would be like summer-time temps most other places. Nice to think of you enjoying your favourite time of year.

I have several cat friends and one of them believes in a bizarre cure-all. Molasses mixed with a bit of cider vinegar and a tiny dash of salt. It sounds like something that I would throw up if it was served to me but apparently their cat licks it all up. Yikes!

Part of the “mystery illness” cure while I was force-feeding Azar was to also give him this liquid supplement made by Anima-Strath, which is basically brewer’s yeast, malt, honey and orange juice. Apparently it increases “resistance & vitality”. Gave some to Azar a couple of days ago, but shortly afterwards there was a high-stress incident with Loki attacking Azar in the litter box and he ended up puking it all back up again. Might give it a go today as he has now gone almost a day and a half without throwing up. Still gagging a bit though…
For some reason most cats adore malt extract, so maybe it’s the same deal with molasses?

Oh, btw it’s has to be _organic_ molasses and cider vinegar and sea salt. Naturally. LOL

Good luck with getting our two to eat that! If it ain’t chicken or prawns (and only king prawns, if you please) Murphy ain’t having nothing to do with it!
We have a week away coming up, just visiting cities in the UK, specifically Liverpool and Glasgow (gonna give that haggis a go). It’s our fifth wedding anniversary on the 27th (WHERE did the time go?) so we’ll find somewhere good in Liverpool to have a meal then.
Then it’s back to the final push of getting the house ready for builders. A lot of stuff going into storage, I think.

I read somewhere once that cats shouldn’t eat prawns, or any shellfish. Of course I may have dreamt it. Might be worth a google.
Glasgow! I’ll get in touch with my buddy WeeRascal. He’ll know the best places to go in Glasgow, where to find good haggis, and will even tell you about his favourite “hidden treasure” place to eat. Will email you later with the info. Have you been to either place before?
Yes, those five years sure passed quickly – though not without incident – for all of us. Seems like just yesterday I was sitting in the living room waiting for the Vegas transmission…

I didn’t mean to make you feel guilty….it’s always hard to figure out the right time to take your cat or dog or whatever to the vet.

Aw, that’s okay. I just said that to make you feel bad. 😉
Just spoke to the vet who said to put both cats on anti-biotics for a week. Except if Azar has caught Loki’s feline herpes then that’s a virus. See? This is why I hesitate to bring the cats in. Half the time they get misdiagnosed anyhow. So frustrating.
Anyhow, there hasn’t been any vomiting since Monday night and the main symptoms now are listlessness, sneezing and a weird cough/gag thing. But he’s still eating and drinking. Oh, I don’t know…

So sorry we’re not with you 😦
We’re hoping we might be able to do it in the autumn.
Hope the Furry Boys are better today.
Steve – Cafe Gandolfi in the Merchant City always used to be fab. Haven’t been there for a few years but it might be worth a try.

I know! We should just be finishing a fabulous lunch now and making plans for driving down to Málaga via Ronda tomorrow. 😦
Good thing I never got round to that M&S list you asked me to make – you’d be stuck with a whack of over-sized underwear!
The boys have started the anti-biotics today. Loki scarfs his spiked paté down in a split second. Azar … well, it ain’t easy. But at least I didn’t lose a fingertip this morning.
