Had a tapas tour last night and went to meet my clients (two lovely couples from England) at their hotel. On the way to our first stop wandering down a cobbly narrow street my left ankle suddenly twisted and … OW! It hurt like a sonofabitch. But there was no way I wanted to cancel the tour so I hobbled my way through it. Actually had a great time in spite of the now very swollen ankle, though by the end I was having serious trouble walking. So I called Nog to come and meet me as I felt a bit vulnerable walking home alone. And here is the damage. The swelling actually doesn’t show up as much in the photo. There’s no real bruising but I can’t put any weight on it without a lot of pain. Dammit.
So, am sitting here looking at all these boxes and thinking what rotten timing. There’s so much to do and I can barely move around. But, I will go to my class at Agustín’s this evening. He’s a doctor, so if he says I should go get the thing x-rayed then I’ll taxi over from there and also get my port cleaning done, as that’s due this week. It’s always something…

I could see what this would be about by just looking at the photos.
Do you have some ointment? Arnica (in form of globules or some salve) wouldn’t go amiss, either.
Hope it’s just a swelling.

Good Lord woman! Can you not just let good things happen without sabotaging them?

Have the cats lick it in turns while you are resting, or apply them directly (the vibration frequency of purring heals living tissue: true fact).

I am now sporting one of these, and except for cutting the circulation a bit at the top, the ankle really feels much better.
Went to my English class at Agustín’s, which is about a five minute walk from my new place but a twenty minute walk with f*cked up ankle. I just wanted to sit down and cry about half-way there, it hurt so much. And not just the ankle, but also my right hip started complaining shortly after leaving the house.
Anyhoo, Agustín is a doctor. He had a look at my ankle and said it looked like just a bad sprain, but he also said that sprains are tricky and there might be a hairline fracture or (eep!) broken ligament. I asked if I should go to emergency and he said if I did that they would probably slap on a cast just to be on the safe side (like they did when his wife Elena bunged up her ankle about a month ago). He moved the ankle around a bit and seemed to think it would be okay to wait at least another 24 hours. Meanwhile, he wrote a prescription for this “tobillera” and Elena lent me her crutches.
So if the pain doesn’t lift in the next 24 hours, and especially if it gets worse, Agustín says I should go to the hospital and have the ankle x-rayed. Meanwhile my new “tobillera” will make moving around the house more comfortable, and I guess Nog will be in charge of shopping and any other chores that require going out.
What a day! Got tired of sandwiches so I asked Nog to pick up a roasted chicken on the way home. Somehow he got it turned upside down and it leaked all over the apartment before he noticed… yep, some day we’ll look back on this and laugh.
Really hope to get the kitchen functioning tomorrow!

There is always pizza… that’s the staple food in the Lair during house moves, especially when the hatchlings are involved.
If that support sock isn’t enough, get an elastic bandage might be handy. Get a “Dauer” – they’re thick, brown and very steady. Wrap it around the ankle giving enoush support on both the sole of the food and the calf and it will feel better. Let your leg rest in a high position.

Don’t forget to ice it… I use a “Magic Bag” which is filled with oat grains http://www.magicbag.com/pain-relief-pad/Because it is filled with oat grains, you can make one yourself. You can either freeze it for at least 4 hours for a cold compress or microwave it for hot. The good thing about it is that it is a moist heat which I find more soothing than a hot water bottle.

I think I’ll also get one of those elastic bandages for around the house.
Today the swelling seems a bit less, though it’s still painful.
Ah well, think I’ll use today to catch up on some of my online work. Thank goodness for my iPhone!

If it should happen again, the BBJP treatment for a sprain is two buckets of water – one as hot as is bearable, and one as cold – alternate the foot/ankle in question between the two – staying in each one for as long as you can stand it. This works best when done soon after the injury though.

I’ve never had a sprain before, and sincerely hope I never have another one. But thanks to you and Sled and others here, I’ll sure know what to do if it happens again.

I’ve never had a sprained ankle but Paul has had a number. The first time was in 1976, as he was coming down Snowdon and before I had learned to drive … I started taking lessons shortly after! Like you, we had no idea then how best to treat it. In the early 80s, he badly sprained the other ankle when descending uneven steps … the bruising was truly startling, spreading from toe to knee, and the pain was excruciating. I really hope yours is already on the mend. x

Those magic bag thingys are the shit! I had a sore back while I was in Arizona, and my hostess loaned me one fresh out of the microwave. By the time it was cool the pain was gone and didn’t return.
I sprained my ankle when I was 12 or so, and all I can really remember about it was how much it hurt — I hope you’re moving around smoothly again soon! And don’t rush the unpacking; better a little mess than a long-lasting injury.
