Although there are still two more sleeps until I leave for Part II of my summer holiday in Málaga, I am already thinking about packing, getting laundry done, etc. I have never been good at just picking up and going somewhere, probably because I hardly ever do this. I imagine that if I travelled regularly (as I hope to do in the future) I would have a bunch of stuff already prepared like a fully-stocked toiletry bag with cute travel-size items, and I wouldn’t take way more clothes than I actually need. Whatever.
The thing about going away for more than just overnight is that I need (yes, NEED) to take my laptop with me, and my little iPod music deck, camera, and the various cords and plugs required for those. Plus I usually slip my iPad in my bag so I can comfortably read or play scrabble on the train. And when travelling with a kitten! Well, I’ve got to bring her food and toys, as well as Morcilla in her little travel bag.
My last trip to Málaga involved an extra suitcase because I stayed the first week at my friend Manolo’s place and brought my own sheets and towels. So at least this time I will just have the one suitcase (on wheels), the laptop bag and Morcilla.
What’s your travel style? Can you just throw a few things in a suitcase or backpack and be gone at a moment’s notice? Or, like me, do you tend to over-pack and fret about having maybe left something behind?
Interesting how times have changed. When I was gainfully employed mobile phones were still a novelty, there were no wheels on suitcases, anything with an ‘i’ in front of it was a typo, laptops were still too heavy to carry and the internet was too small for an ebook. Kittens were left at home. And hotels had no beds.

I’m a lister. I do a list of everything I need, double check it, then tick everything off as I lay them on the bed. THEN cross them off the list when I put them in the suitcase. Then add a few things I forgot to put on the list.

I admire people who can just up and go….for me, it’s usually a big deal.

Back when I could face traveling at all, I was always very meticulous and was planning my packing a week or two in advance. And I always packed too much because I can’t stand the thought of being unprepared for the unexpected, including an unexpected change in my own idea of what I might want to do or wear. I suppose it’s one of the things that made it seem like too much of a chore to be worth it, though just the discomfort of being at the mercy of strangers is at least as off-putting. I became awfully good at heaving huge awkward pieces of luggage on and off of conveyances.

When I went to Málaga for five nights last December I had more luggage than Justine, who was travelling the world for six months. 😀
