The Cute Engineer is going to mastermind what has become our traditional NYE tapas, thanks to your inspiration. This year: Goat cheese stuffed mushrooms; brussels sprouts pan roasted with pepper flakes, honey and vinegar; wasabi mayo deviled eggs; manchego; little bowls of leftover French onion soup with Basque cheese. There will be pics. We laid in a bottle of Palo Cortado, and then the friend who helps me with money management offered a bottle of Chandon. However, he added that it has been in his wine cellar for “decades” (I get the sense that he is doing some deep decluttering) and might not be great. He’s probably right, so I’m keeping the sherry glasses on the table.
Later, as is his custom, CE will have pickled herring at midnight. This is something he does religiously every year, having started when he was one year old and his grandmother babysat him on NYE. She firmly believed the herring had to be eaten at midnight for luck, so feature CE’s dad coming home from the hospital where Second Son had been born two days before to find him in his highchair, gumming away at pickled herring. A lifetime of gastronomy starts with a single fillet.

I’m doing tapas tonight too! A few dishes… espinacas con garbanzos, gambas al ajillo, a small tortilla de patatas… other bits (to be decided).
Here we do the 12 grapes at midnight, but I can never stay up that late. And if I do I never want to cram 12 grapes into my mouth while the bells chime, go figure.

Yes, first time, we have avoided it up til now…..being asthmatic mine come with a side order of a chest infection of course!  Don’t know how we got it….we have met no one who had it, before or now!  Still wearing masks for medical, transport and crowded places.  Just goes to show.  So our New Year Toast may be toast literally if I can sort it out, or just medication if I can’t!  I think/hope we are both over the worst now…..that was Wednesday and yesterday when getting out of bed was as much as we could do. We will test again  sometime in the next two days if we feel better.  Hopefully some good news in the New Year. Take care, and Happy New Year Anne and Paul

So sorry Anne. As you know, I held out just over two and a half years before it got me. It’s probably the new variant that nobody is talking about because they want to pretend the pandemic is over. Apparently vaccine and antibody resistant. Fuck.
Take care and keep testing. I was positive for 11 days. Stayed home (of course) even when I was feeling better. xx
