I’ve been sort of half-assed looking for new shoes as sandal weather is about to abruptly end. Even though I got a couple pairs of new shoes just before Covid lockdown I keep going back to these trusty old Campers I bought in 2017. To say they were looking the worse for wear would be a serious understatement, but damn they are just so comfortable, so I decided to take them to a shoe repair place down the street from me. What could it hurt?
I expected the guy to tell me the shoes were a lost cause, but he took a long serious look at them, touching the leather, checking the soles and stitching and said that they were worth saving. It would cost 55 euros. At first I balked at this but then he took one shoe, cleaned and polished the toe and said “see? this is how they will look after, only even better because I will condition the leather and give the soles a good cleaning too”. So what the heck. I mean even if they only last another winter or two 55€ is much cheaper than a new pair of shoes (important factor now) and with all the trouble I’m having walking the last thing I want to worry about is also having painful feet.
Yesterday I got a Whatsapp message from him with these two photos saying ” your shoes are ready!” and wow, what a difference. I really should have taken a before pic so you could properly appreciate the magic this guy worked. Seeing them in person they look even better and I am so happy to have my old Campers revived and back home. Looks like I’ll be needing them this weekend.

With the threat of massive rain storms this weekend I took advantage of a somewhat sunny Thursday to get ALL the laundry done and also, as it’s getting a bit chilly, to air out the duvet in the sun up on the roof (just in case). When it came back in I laid it out on the clothes rack and Morcilla has decided this is her new favourite spot. Until it ends up on my bed.

A few weeks ago the hot water pressure started acting up. Sometimes it was there, other times nothing, although the cold water was working fine. Landlord had someone come over from his insurance company and – of course! – just before he showed up the hot water kicked back in again. So this guy reported back that there was no problem, even though I had told him it was an intermittent thing, and he actually told me (but not the landlord) that the water heater was probably blocked, so nothing was done. Spent the next couple of weeks fiddling with the cold-hot water taps to get the hot water to kick in, which usually happened.
Until last Saturday when it didn’t. And that was it, we’ve had NO hot water since Saturday morning. Not wanting to bother the landlord over the weekend I sent a text message hoping they could do something first thing Monday morning, which they did. Nice guy who came over late last night told me the water heater definitely needs to be replaced, called the landlord, and apparently no problem. Except now I have no idea when we are going to get a replacement water heater. Might be today (doubtful), more likely tomorrow or even whenever.
Meanwhile, we’ve been taking COLD SHOWERS since Saturday and – can I tell you? – it’s really really unpleasant and even painful. I’m actually considering booking a hotel or asking a neighbour if I can come over and shower. I mean, I could call the Corte Inglés right now and pay for a new water heater to be delivered and installed within 24 hours, but I already did that when the washing machine died earlier this year, and I really don’t think it’s up to me to replace these basic appliances. This is very frustrating.
