facebook … why?

facebook

Can anyone explain to me why Facebook is worth any of my time?

And I don’t mean why you may prefer Facebook over Twitter, or that it’s easier than having a blog, etc, etc …

I would really like to know why someone like me with several blogs, a Fotki account for photo sharing, and two active Twitter accounts would require a Facebook account. I am not being facetious – I really want to know. I’ve been keeping two FB accounts running, even though I maybe only visit them a couple of times a week. Any posts from me there are auto-forwarded posts from Twitter. And I would be happy to drop both FB accounts today except people keep telling me that they are necessary to have in terms of social media stuff, especially for business purposes.

I don’t understand the difference between FB home pages, Business Pages, and Fan Pages. I hate all the stupid adolescent apps that bombard you with zoo animals, pokes, and invitations to join a mafia family. To name but a few. And recently I can’t visit my FB pages without being bombarded by auto-suggestions about people I should add as a Friend. I mean, get outta my face already with that crap.

Am I the only person who seriously dislikes Facebook?

evernote or remember the milk?

evernote milk
Another cry for geeky help today.

Recently these two online “to do list” and task management web apps have come to my attention. And well, you know how much I love lists, and also how I need extra help these days getting myself organised, so I had a look at both of them. At first glance it’s hard to see if one is better for me than the other, so I thought I’d ask if anyone here is using either of them and if you have a preference.

One person I know using Remember The Milk said it was tricky getting to know the layout and how to use it, but after that she thought it was very helpful. My main concern is that it uses Google Gears, which I had to uninstall from my computers awhile back because it was causing problems (though now I don’t remember exactly what … interfering with some other programmes).

Both also have iPhone apps, which would be useful for me. But before I spend a few hours “getting organised” I would like to have a better idea about which app would be best for me. So … feedback? Pros & cons? Help?

hostgator or bluehost?

bluehost-vs-hostgator

I could use a bit of geeky help.

I have been using BlueHost for my azahar-sevilla.com domain (which includes Sevilla Tapas) for two years now, and within two weeks I have to renew my contract. Or not. Last weekend I got a text message on my mobile phone informing me that the credit card payment had already gone through and, when I saw the amount, I got in touch with BlueHost and asked why I was being charged $8.95 a month when they are giving new customers a $3.95 a month special offer. And thus began my foray into searching for a new hosting service…

The name that kept coming up on Twitter, and by people I know in RL, was HostGator. So I checked them out and, while they wouldn’t end up being much cheaper ($7.95 a month, though on the same special offer it is apparently $6.95 for new customers), they seem to be very strongly recommended on their customer service. And to me that is quite important. They will also move all your stuff over for you from another host, which is also important to me, especially as I’ve been trying to move azahar natural clothing over to BlueHost for two years and haven’t been able to figure out how to do this. BlueHost doesn’t offer this service and the fellow who designed the page keeps telling me it’s easy but hasn’t offered to help.

So if you have any knowledge of or experience with either of these hosting sites I would appreciate any feedback and advice … thanks!

toshiba tofu1

This is Tofu … Flor’s new laptop.

A Toshiba Satellite L300 29U. And nobody is more surprised than Flor that she ended up buying a new computer yesterday, as that had not been even remotely on her “to-do” list. But  we’d got to talking after yoga class about this and that, and I asked if she still wanted me to help her with her computer stuff. You may recall that awhile back I helped set her up with a WordPress blog, a Twitter account, a new Gmail account, Fotki, and a few other things. It was after doing this that I got the idea that I could probably charge money for this sort of thing. But then I went back on chemo and everything went for a burton. Until yesterday …

ram-1Build it and they will come…

So remember back in March when the fabulous Sexy Beast developed a crack in her casing and had to go into computer hospital for over a month, which resulted in me buying Shadow as a back-up computer, because I couldn’t be left unconnected at home? Well, ever since SB came back it seemed to me that she was running very slowly, especially compared to Shadow. So she has been somewhat neglected. Until now…
