So this afternoon Nog and I were escaping The Heat by staying in and rewatching this rather delightful interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, starring the fabulous Robert Downey Jr.

And during a scene in which Holmes and Watson were bickering I said to Nog – ” Hey, they sound just like House and Wilson!”

And then the penny dropped!

Is House a play on words for Holmes? Both famous for their detective work, and both with a sidekick that has the initials J.W.

What do you think?

Am I on to something? Or have a zillion other people come up with this before me and it’s a load of bollocks?

I have to say that I’m tiring a bit of House as there doesn’t seem to be much development going on there with the various characters and storylines.

On the other hand, I am waiting with baited breath for season two of the fabulous Sherlock, which is a very innovative take on the Doyle classic, taking place in modern day London (and the next season will also have Stephen Fry in it!).

I first read The Complete Sherlock Holmes when I was about 15 and, even though the stories did get a bit repititious towards the end of the two volumes, I enjoyed them very much. He’s still my favourite detective.

Who is your favourite detective?

amazon, books, films, video

Wow, I had no idea that I’d started ordering from Amazon so long ago. Though I remember why. Back in the day it was impossible to see any films here in original version, or even rent the orginal versions on video. I also didn’t realise it was possible to go back and trace ALL my Amazon orders until I saw that Beth had done this and found the first thing she’d ever ordered. Unlike Beth, Amazon has never sent me any gifts for being a good customer – after almost ten years you’d think they’d at least send along a little something from my Wish List (like maybe season 8 of 24  😉 ).

Anyhow, my first order was this video of Wilde, which I still have, though I think I also have a DVD version now. This was before I learned that if I ordered three items I got charged the same delivery fee as for one. These days delivery to Spain is free! Progress, eh?

What was your first Amazon order?

julie juliaFinally got to see Julie & Julia on Sunday.

I’d heard that La Streep’s performance was magnifique! and I wasn’t disappointed. For once her penchant for bizarre accents wasn’t offputting, though when Nog first heard her speaking as Julia Child he said he was reminded of a Monty Python sketch. And I was left with a strong desire to make boeuf bourguignon and debone a duck.

Has anyone else seen it?

This-is-it-poster

Wow!

I was prepared to be disappointed because the trailers were so tantalising I couldn’t believe the film would be that high energy and fun all the way through … but it truly was. I won’t gush on quite as much as Dame Elizabeth, but I did think that there were moments of sheer genius. And you could also see that MJ definitely lived on another planet, to put it kindly.

I’ve never considered myself a Michael Jackson fan particularly, though I did love the Jackson 5 when I was a kid and I remember being totally blown away (along with the rest of the world) when MJ made his very dramatic “come back” on the 25 Years Of Motown special, with his amazing performance of Billy Jean. Which was also one of the highlights of This Is It. Others that I especially enjoyed were The Way You Make Me Feel (fabulous West Side Story set), Beat It and Thriller. Astounding choreography. And really, that’s what made the whole film for me. I’ve never seen anyone move quite like Michael Jackson and I already want to see this film again.
