Yes, Former Frontier Editor, I did meet him once – very briefly.

Back around 1980 at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, which is held at Birds Hill Park (about 25 kms north of Winnipeg). I was working as a volunteer, which meant I had to do three shifts (one each day) and in return I not only got free admission but also a backstage pass. My job was in Hospitality, so I had to greet the performers when they arrived and help them get settled in, show them where to store their things, where the food tent was, etc. It was the best volunteer gig at the festival, as you can imagine.

Anyhow, I was so thrilled that Stéphane Grappelli was scheduled to play and that I wouldn’t be working during his performance. But this meant that I was working when he arrived on the site. And even before he arrived the rumours started coming in that he was less than pleased about having to travel to the site on the performers’ bus and not in a limo. So by the time he arrived and I went to greet him he was clearly in a very foul mood and all I got in response was an icy cold stare before one of the festival organisers took over and led him away. And that was that.

I wonder if he remembered that moment for the rest of his life too . . . 😉

And yes, the concert was brilliant and I got to sit right up front at side stage. f_wow.gif

pain in the neck!

neck-pain.jpg As if having a wonky hip and sciatica/lumbago wasn’t enough…

I’ve had chronic neck pain for years. Apparently this is because my neck is completely rigid and lacks the slight curve that necks normally have. I found this out about 12 years ago when I could barely move my neck and my left forearm very weirdly swelled up to almost double its size. Even after a whole whack of tests nobody could explain this, though the two things must have been connected because after a couple of months the neck pain subsided and my arm went back to normal.

Another weird thing I notice is that when I’m lying down on my back I sometimes can ‘hear/feel’ an odd sound/sensation where the neck joins the skull … kind of a bubbly feeling with the slightest ‘almost there’ sound similar to crumpling up a paper bag.

As I say, this has been going on for as long as I can remember. But since yesterday I’ve been getting dizzy whenever I lie down (and sometimes getting up from lying down). And not just a bit dizzy – I always thought the expression ‘the room was spinning’ was an exaggeration until now.

My GP is away on holiday – the one I saw yesterday says it’s a neck contraction and prescribed muscle relaxants for 3 weeks, which I’m not really keen on taking. He also gave me a prescription for some ‘anti-dizzy’ pills (no idea what those are …). I dunno, I think I’ll just wait until next week when Agustín is back and get his opinion, because the dizziness is quite worrying.

Meanwhile, just wondering if anyone has had anything similar and what sort of treatment worked for you.

Just one more week of holidays!

Time sure does fly when you’re having fun. I have to say that this has been one of my best ‘holidays’ ever, just hanging around at home and doing whatever. What I’ve enjoyed most is a delicious sense of freedom – not having to be anywhere at any specific time, not having to do anything unless I actually feet like it. And not feeling guilty about not getting certain things done. For example, the hallway remains unpainted. Feh, who cares?

Well, off for a morning walk while it’s still cool. Saw some perfect shoes for winter the other day . . . think I’ll go see if they fit.

I wonder if Phelps will get in trouble for calling the president’s mother a fag?
