. . . I wanna be like you-oo-ooo! f_musicalnote.giff_musicalnote.giff_musicalnote.gif

Have you ever noticed that your online character/personality occasionally attracts people who think this is who you really are and then they make a massive effort to become your ‘friend’ when in fact they are actually wishing they could be like you? Except of course they have no idea who you are.

These people are kinda scary . . . because if you don’t respond in kind you go from being perched on a pedestal you never wanted to be on anyhow to being whatever sort of monster can be fabricated, usually something they are most afraid of that has nothing whatsoever to do with you, in order to justify whatever nastiness they come up with to knock you off said pedestal.

Ah, public life, eh? Next I’ll be shaving my head . . .

bombs away…

Clearly aren’t as important as bombs at home. Check these out…

  • Twin bombings hit Iraqi capital
  • 30 dead in Iraq cafe bombing
  • Suicide bombers kill up to 90 Shias in Iraq
  • Car bomb kills 18 children in Iraq

A small sampling of almost daily news reports about innocent civilians being killed by suicide bomb attacks in Iraq.

Are Londoners, New Yorkers, Madrileños somehow more important than Iraqi civilians?

Where are the protests, the displays of public mourning and moral outrage … even the public debate?

50-something Londoners were killed on July 7, 2005 … almost a daily average in Baghdad. How is that we westerners feel comfortable maintaining this obvious double standard?

UPDATE 16 July: major attacks in 2007

  • 16 July: At least 85 die in twin bombings in Kirkuk
  • 7 July: 130 killed in Amirli market bombing
  • 19 June: At least 78 die in Baghdad mosque blast
  • 18 April: Up to 200 killed in car bombings in Baghdad
  • 29 March: At least 60 killed in double suicide bombing in Baghdad market
  • 6 March: At least 90 killed in double suicide bombing in Hilla
  • 3 Feb: At least 130 die in suicide truck bombing in Baghdad
  • 22 Jan: 88 killed in Baghdad car bombings

on being incensed…

Gaaaaaaa! I hate incense!

Or to be more accurate, I am incensed about being incensed to distraction, making my eyes water and the vile stink of it making me feel totally nauseous. Perhaps it’s a throwback response from being forced to go to church as a child? Whatever.

The problem is that there is a souvenir shop directly below me (I live on the third floor – fourth floor US/Canada). Last spring they started selling incense burners and put a table outside and suddenly clouds of incense started wafting into my living/diningroom. Okay, it depends on which way the wind is blowing, but some days they may as well be burning that shit on my diningroom table!

So I spoke to the owner of the shop, asking him to please either use less incense or at least not burn it during ‘lunchtime’ (in Spain this is approx 2-4pm) as when I have my balcony doors open it makes it impossible to eat. He basically told me to piss off. So I did – and called the police.

The police came over and I explained that I’d tried being reasonable with the shop owner but, in fact, I didn’t think he had any legal right to place things outside his shop on public property that might annoy the neighbours. And the police actually said I was right and said they would talk to the shop owner. After that the problem subsided.

Until today.

The first really spring-like day of the year – it’s 21ºC and sunny and I opened up all the balcony doors to let in some lovely fresh air . . . and got a noseful of fucking nauseating incense instead! So I’ve had to close the doors and it’s awful feeling so shut in like this. f_cross.gif

(though I do think those little dragon-egg incense burners are rather cute)

The fabulous Gaudí dragon in Parc Güell has been vandalised by some 22-year-old ‘punk’ asshole (click on thumbnails to enlarge pics). It’s actually a fountain and was one of the highlights of visiting the park when Nog and I were there last month. I really felt sad and sickened when I saw that photo of it all smashed up in the paper today.

To hell with Orange!

As you may recall in my posts about being offline and then getting re-connected, (with temporary dial-up), the internet connection at casa az has been a bit dodgy this past week or so.

So this morning I checked out some offers with Telefónica and found out that I can get high-speed ADSL (with free wifi router), free national calls (including 120 minutes of mobile calls per month) and a groovy-cool television offer. More than 60 channels, with the option to watch non-Spanish films and TV programmes in original version!!! f_somersault.gif

All for 45 euros a month!

And on top of that we get some sort of gift. Not sure if it’s 10 nights in a hotel or two round-trip plane tickets for somewhere in Europe.

Not sure when the change-over will happen. Apparently Telefónica will take care of cancelling the service with Orange but then I’ll probably have to wait 3-5 days for a guy to come over and hook up the TV thingy and bring the new router.

So all this nonsense with Orange has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. My friend Agustín has this same Telefónica package and he says it’s great, but we probably wouldn’t have changed servers if Orange hadn’t fucked up so badly. Anyhow, I’ll wait until the new service is up and running before I say ‘all’s well that ends well’, but it certainly sounds like a good deal. f_ok1.gif
