october

Which means it should not be 35º and I should not have to put on the AC in the late afternoon because it’s 29º in my living room. These past two years have been so fucked up here. Way too hot for far too long and NO RAIN. Or at least not enough to make any difference. I mean, you all know l like sandal weather to last as long as possible, but that doesn’t have to be at these crazy temps.

And (here comes the rant) I’m getting so tired of people commenting on how LUCKY we are because it’s all rainy, cold and miserable where they are. Well guess what? It’s actually miserable for us when our reservoirs are down to less than 25% capacity, our crops are dying (olive oil production is half of what it should be this year… for starters) and it’s actually too hot to comfortably take a walk or sit outside. Water bills are going up by 35% starting next month, electricity is already off the charts, and in some cases basic food costs have almost doubled in the past couple of years. Yet our incomes have not increased.

Of course people coming here on holiday think it’s all a fabulous bargain as things are still cheaper than back at home, but do they even give a thought about us? More and more I feel resentful towards tourists who only think of us as their “cheap sunshine break” and especially when they come here, and if we are very lucky and it rains, then omg they feel hard done by because their holiday has been ruined.

And yes I know some of my work is reliant on tourism, to an extent. But my food tour clients tend to be the kind of travellers who fit into my rather niche offering. Which means they are conscious of what’s going on and, I think, travel with a bit more awareness and respect than the average tourist. Because once Sevilla turns into a desert and daily summer temps hit 50º and there is NO WATER… well, that’ll be it for tourism. I don’t think I’ll live to see that day, which I don’t think is that far off, but it still hurts to watch people being so uncaring and selfish. Same old…

hot hot hot

It’s still a fairly mild 30º here today but by the weekend we will suddenly be up to 44º!!! For several days by the looks of it. Yep, here it comes. My lunchtime tapas tour on Saturday should be fun, and no doubt I will be asked – as I am almost always asked on my food tours – how I cope with THE HEAT here in summer. And I always answer that it’s the same as I how coped when it was -30º or -40º in Canada. I STAYED HOME. As much as possible anyhow.

It’s like people think we have some magic powers here that enable us to be out in extreme weather without feeling the effects. Uh… nope. We just do our best not to go out into it. And keep that AC going as much as possible. I still can’t believe that I spent my first 18 years here on the top floor of a building without a lift and WITHOUT HEATING OR AC. I mean okay, I was 30 years younger, and back then probably couldn’t have afforded to run the AC anyhow. But there is no way I could live with that heat now (heck I couldn’t even manage the stairs now!). Once it hits 29-30º inside my apartment that AC goes on, at least during peak times.

I just hope both my AC unit and the power grid hold up. With Sevilla being flooded by tourists who keep their hotel room AC blasting all day, shower like crazy and expect full swimming pools, I am not optimistic about getting through this blistering summer of intense drought without some kind of problem that will affect us residents who are, and who have always been, conscientious about saving water and not abusing our infrastructure.

Wish us luck! How are things going in your part of the world?

caracolia

The first Festival de los Caracoles – CARACOLIA – is taking place June 9 & 10 down by the river and, popping over on opening night, it was actually great fun. Caracoles (small snails) are a true Sevillano traditional tapa and they are also seasonal. Unlike their larger brothers, the Cabrillas, they are cooked in a spicy broth and each tapas bar has its own “secret sauce”. During this event 13 bars from Sevilla province participated. There was live music and the setting couldn’t have been better on a warm breezy summer night…

snail season 23

We’re about mid-way through snail season. Yes, there are bars that serve them year round but those are grown in greenhouses. These are yer proper free-range wild snails! And as you can see there are two types. The tiny caracoles and the larger plumper cabrillas. They are also prepared differently. Cabrillas are cooked in a fairly standard tomato-based cuminy sauce, but with caracoles it’s all about the broth. Every bar has their own broth recipe and they really are quite distinct. Some are garlicky, others feature various herbs, some are quite peppery, and they are often served in a small glass so that once you manage to spoon and slurp out all the caracoles you can finish by drinking the broth. As you can imagine, a bit messy to eat (especially the cabrillas) because, although you are given a toothpick to dig the little buggers out of their shells, you still have to pick them up. BUT the best way to eat them, especially the smaller caracoles, is just to pick one up, and slurp it out broth and all.
