smoky sunrise

The smoke from the Canada fires has reached Spain. For the past couple of days the grey haze over Sevilla has been attributed to this. It sounds crazy until we remember that we are often overcome by Sahara sand. Stunning photo above by In Like Flynn Photography shows a smoky sunrise in Gibraltar.

hot hot hot

It’s still a fairly mild 30º here today but by the weekend we will suddenly be up to 44º!!! For several days by the looks of it. Yep, here it comes. My lunchtime tapas tour on Saturday should be fun, and no doubt I will be asked – as I am almost always asked on my food tours – how I cope with THE HEAT here in summer. And I always answer that it’s the same as I how coped when it was -30º or -40º in Canada. I STAYED HOME. As much as possible anyhow.

It’s like people think we have some magic powers here that enable us to be out in extreme weather without feeling the effects. Uh… nope. We just do our best not to go out into it. And keep that AC going as much as possible. I still can’t believe that I spent my first 18 years here on the top floor of a building without a lift and WITHOUT HEATING OR AC. I mean okay, I was 30 years younger, and back then probably couldn’t have afforded to run the AC anyhow. But there is no way I could live with that heat now (heck I couldn’t even manage the stairs now!). Once it hits 29-30º inside my apartment that AC goes on, at least during peak times.

I just hope both my AC unit and the power grid hold up. With Sevilla being flooded by tourists who keep their hotel room AC blasting all day, shower like crazy and expect full swimming pools, I am not optimistic about getting through this blistering summer of intense drought without some kind of problem that will affect us residents who are, and who have always been, conscientious about saving water and not abusing our infrastructure.

Wish us luck! How are things going in your part of the world?

ac 23

This is crazy. Yesterday evening I put on the AC for a couple of hours before bedtime because it had got up to 29º in the living room and I wanted to cool things down a bit before going to bed. This usually doesn’t happen until June ffs. It’s going to be a long and expensive summer.

And we also have water restrictions to look forward to. What irks is that we are already being told to cut back and save water (which of course is understandable and we are) but they’re still pushing for full on hotel and holiday apt occupancy this summer and the tourists can use as much of our precious water as they want. How is this right? Likewise with the AC. Because if the grid fails this summer it won’t be because locals are running their air conditioning units 24-7. Nobody here does that.

I am so fed up with all of this. The politicians keep bullshitting us with promises of Sustainable Tourism (elections are coming up next month) meanwhile ALL their actions point to the complete opposite. Imagine, politicians lying?? The media has even come up with the term Turismofobia which also puts the onus on us. It isn’t a fucking phobia. It’s a genuine concern based on a very stark reality. We aren’t imagining anything here, it is actually happening. So how is that a phobia? Ridiculous.

Between Covid deniers and Climate Change deniers I honestly don’t know how to feel any more. It feels pointless to keep raging against the machine when it seems most people just don’t give a fuck as long as they aren’t immediately affected, can still go out for dinner and take holidays and pretend like everything is normal.

I ain’t gonna lie, these past couple of years have taken a huge toll on my physical and mental well-being. I barely sleep any more, I feel exhausted and anxiety-ridden most days, and I don’t know what the answer is, or if there even is one. But I’ll still keep using my AC sparingly, keep wearing my mask in poorly ventilated public situations, and keep hoping for the best. xx

tornado cloud

Crossing the bridge to Triana the other day these curious “tornado” clouds caught my eye. I tried to get a bit closer but there was too much traffic on the bridge. But you can see them bottom left hand corner. When I posted this photo on Twitter I was told that these are called cirrus clouds and are made of ice! (fuck I still love Twitter). Anyhow, aren’t they cool?
