change, home

Today I said goodbye to the apartment next door, where I lived for eight years, and kept on after I moved to my present home. For another eight years I rented out rooms next door and, for my efforts, got a small income that helped pay a portion of my rent here. I’ll miss that income, and I’ll also miss that apartment. I always had dreams of one day using it as my “office” when one of my biz ideas took off … ah well. I’m surpised at how sad it felt, handing over the keys and having one last look around. So many memories…

magic dusters!

cleaning, home, magic dusters

OR

I have often spoken about what a crap housecleaner I am. Because although I do tend to keep things tidy(ish), I don’t go big time on tedious stuff like dusting, window washing, oven cleaning … but one thing that cannot be avoided here in Sevilla is THE DUST. It gets everywhere all the time (not unlike an unruly orange kitten I know) and so trying to keep dust off the furniture becomes a daily, well, waste of time, as far as I’m concerned. But even I get to the point where I concede that things need dusting, which always ends up with dust flying all over, much sneezing, and other general annoyance. But then…

A few weeks ago when I was cleaning up next door for my last ever new tenants I saw that one of the ex-tenants had left a box of these “plumeros mágicos” (magic dusters) in her wardrobe. And so, since I was cleaning anyhow and it was plenty dusty over there I gave them a whirl … and well, I never! I just slid the thing along dusty surfaces and they not only came out clean, but all the dust and grime ended up on the magic duster and not all over me and the floor. And that was all it took for me to adopt this new cleaning item. The refills will cost me about 75 cents a week. WHATEVER. I don’t care what they cost because they actually make dusting fun! Yeah, I know how pathetic that sounds … but it is just so darned satisfying to use this thing that I find myself enthralled.

10 things I’d save if my house was on fire

I’ve been tagged by my friend Trucie to come up with a list of 10 things I would want to save from my home if it were suddenly engulfed in mysterious flame. This was a no-brainer for me because many years ago, when I was about 22 years old, I did actually wake up in the middle of the night with my apartment on fire. I’d been storing some boxes of my sister’s clothing & stuff out on the (wooden) porch while she was away on holiday and some fucktard decided to find out how well they would burn. And so by the time I woke up (luckily I’ve always been a light sleeper) and smelled smoke the whole porch was in flames and the porch door and windows had exploded into the front room. I was living with my musician boyfriend Ian at the time and, after making sure he was awake, I threw on a dressing gown and hustled him out the back door. You see, when it actually happens your mind doesn’t think about possessions. At least, mine didn’t.

Of course now my first thought would be to stuff the cats into the extra large carrier I bought specifically for this purpose (back when I had three cats) and get them to safety, along with me and Nog. So, that’s only four things. Though if there were enough time I’d probably grab my iPhone too. 😉

How about you? What would you save?

You Should Live in a Red House

You are adventurous and have a passion for life. You want to explore new places.

You crave love and ever lasting romance. You want to deepen your intense feelings for another person.

You don’t worry about what others think of you. You are who you are, and you’ve given up trying to be someone else.

You are quite persuasive. You know how to get your way whenever you want to… and you often want to!

Welcome Loki!

I am probably tempting fate by choosing this name (the original choice “Tapita” just didn’t feel right when I said it out loud to him) but he is definitely a source of mischief and mayhem. Just getting these few photos was extremely difficult as the little thing doesn’t sit still long enough … made me realise that it’s been over 16 years since I’ve had such a small kitten in the house. My goodness, they get absolutely everywhere! All the time!

Anyhow, after much ado, the little guy arrived here on Friday evening. He was a bit confused at first, and Azar (still recovering from his mystery illness) wasn’t very pleased to see him. But after a bit of hissing and spitting by both parties, we seem to have reached a place where they can be in the same room without any obvious rancour on Azar’s part. Loki was keen on being pals from the first minute he arrived (he was living with several other bigger cats in his foster home), but I think it’s going to take a bit of time for him to win Azar over.

Adorable watching him though. And yesterday I actually caught Azar playing with one of Loki’s toys – batting it around the livingroom – and my heart almost burst with joy. Though of course, it turns out my whole apartment is a huge cat toy – who knew?  Loki will play with anything and everything, including thin air. But to see Azar playing like that, especially as we are still having to force-feed him, really made my day.

So whaddaya think? Cute or what?
