angry birds, games, iPhone

For ages I would just roll my eyes at all the Angry Birds mentions on Twitter and elsewhere around the internets and feel smug that I was above such nonsense, but then one day curiosity got the better of me and  I downloaded the free version of the Original Angry Birds and tried it out. And then I saw they had a free version of Angry Birds Rio and thought I’d try that one too. Then today I actually PAID FOR a seasonal version. Well, it was all of 79 cents, but I knew then and there that I was hooked.

I’m not even that good at it, which was proved beyond doubt the other night when I let the seven-year-old boy in my Sevilla Tapas Tour group play Rio … he not only got through to the last levels but upped “my” scores considerably. He then proceeded to complete level 5 on Original Angry Birds in no time flat. I was still struggling to finish level 3. And if none of this means anything to you then consider yourselves lucky.

Of course now I really need an iPad because I also got Agustín hooked and I have to say that after playing Angry Birds on his iPad it’s very hard going back to the small screen.

iphone roaming

iPhone, roaming, telefonica

Can anyone help me figure out the best and cheapest way to use my iPhone while I’m in the UK (starting tomorrow)? At first I was going to jailbreak the thing and get a UK sim card, but I couldn’t get through to any UK providers on their websites (seems you are only allowed to contact them if you already have an account – duh?) so I scrapped that idea. Then I called Telefónica to ask what I would be charged just using roaming … and that’s when I really started getting confused.

So okay, I get the part where I was told it would cost 39 cents a minute to make a call and 15 cents a minute to receive one, plus 35 cents to send an sms. Fine. But when I asked about connecting to internet I was told I would be charged 10 euros for every 1 mb (which means absolutely nothing to me). And when I asked about using WiFi instead I was told I’d be charged just the same. Huh? Just to be sure I called back a day or so later and was told something else (can’t remember what now – different rate charges that I forgot to write down). Then I had to check that my roaming thingy was activated, so I called back yesterday and thought I’d ask about the possible charges again and was told there would be NO charge for me to use internet while abroad because I had a flat rate contract with Telefónica. I asked him to repeat that, then I repeated it, and then I hung up still not believing it could be true.

I know that it’s important to deactivate Data Roaming while abroad (I never have that on anyhow), and I will shut off all but my main email account (can check the others on my laptop). But I still have no idea about the cost of using internet on my iPhone. The very words “roaming charges” fill me with dread. Help?

cats, iPhone, simon's cat

Ha! My buddy WeeRascal sent me a link to this new iPhone app yesterday, featuring Simon’s Cat. So I checked it out, saw it cost 1.59€ and wondered if it was worth it … then decided, what the heck. And the first image made me laugh out loud, so I reckon I’ve already got my money’s worth. 🙂

The app is actually quite fun and good timing too as I found out yesterday that I’m having a PET scan this morning (!). Things got a bit screwed up with my appointment (which was supposed to be for last week, instead they booked it for the 21st), and I finally got a call from Ricardo saying they had a cancellation and could squeeze me in today. So during the various waiting stages at the hospital I’ll have another toy to play with.

And speaking of cats that make me laugh, check out total look of indignant innocence on this one’s face. Found this when I got home from yoga – up to his old tricks again …

iphone-tethering

Remember when I was so excited about having bought a pay-as-you-go dongle from Orange so I could stay connected during my week-long holiday in Málaga last month? And remember how I commented about how temperamental it was and that I could only connect now and then? Well, the damn thing turned out to be totally useless when I went to Zahara…
