exercise, gym, health, sprained ankle, sprained foot

bikeSo to speak. Yesterday I found out that my physiotherapy appointment wasn’t going to be until July 9th, so I decided – FUCK IT – and went to the gym. It was also my first time out and about without using at least one crutch in almost five weeks. Checking back on my last sprain (which was actually a fracture, though I didn’t know it at the time) it took just over a month for me to get back to the gym, so I guess I’m healing at about the same rate as last time. The main difference, of course, is that it’s both of them.

I had been worried about my Málaga getaway last weekend, especially when on my first night there my right foot was in terrible pain. The next day was a bit better, though. And on Saturday I even went out on my friend Victor’s walking tour. Since then the pain level seems to have dropped a bit, with my right foot still hurting more than my left ankle. It’s still very tiring but it’s good to see and feel some improvement.

Anyhow, the gym was fine. I took down my biking level a notch (only going up two “hills” in 40 minutes instead of the usual four) and that didn’t seem to stress anything. I also got a chance to do some work with the hand-held weights and a couple of the upper-body machines. And it felt good to actually break a sweat and feel like I was getting some proper exercise. My gym was also kind enough to give me a free month so that I didn’t have to pay for the time I hadn’t been there.

Tonight I have a Sevilla Tapas Tour and I reckon I will no longer need Peter’s help with “tag team” tours anymore. But I really appreciate that he was there for me and could help out as much as he did. Onwards…

hospitals, sprained ankle, sprained foot

bundled up
After a very long night with very little sleep I got up this morning and went AAAAAAARRRGHH!!! as I gingerly placed my feet on the floor in an attempt to get out of bed. Holy crap. It hadn’t occurred to me that the PAIN from yesterday’s accident could actually get worse. Which was when I started getting scared. I mean, at least last time I had one leg to stand on! Also, the more I shuffled around on two tortuous feet I could feel that my back was starting to go wonky. And the very last thing I need is excruciating back pain added to all this. So around midday I finally took up my friend Juan’s very generous offer to pick me up and drive me to the hospital.

The X-rays showed that my left ankle had a small fracture (!!!) but upon closer inspection it turned out that it was from the first time I sprained it three years ago (!!!!). Seriously… what?? I was walking around on that sucker (with crutches) after a couple of days, even doing tapas tours. I had no idea it was broken because I didn’t go to hospital that time. So when I was told today that I need to stay in and rest my ankle for two weeks… well, I don’t see that happening. Yes, obviously like right now when putting any weight on it at all makes me want to cry, I’ll be avoiding doing that as much as possible. But I hope to be (gently) out and about again after the weekend. The right foot is also badly sprained (thankfully nothing is broken) and so I ended up getting bandaged up like this and sent home with prescriptions for Ibuprofen and Paracetemol. Coming home we ran into a Semana Santa procession and Juan had to let me off where I could normally get home in 3-4 minutes. About 20 very-very-very painful minutes later I finally got home again and I’ve been slobbing out on the sofa ever since.

I was telling Juan that yesterday on the way home Peter had said “let’s go this way” and I said “no, let’s go this way, it’s shorter”…. if I’d gone Peter’s way this never would’ve happened. And then Juan said that if he wasn’t taking me to the hospital he might have been killed in a car accident that afternoon. Point taken. But especially yesterday I kept wishing that I could REWIND and take the other way home. Though of course I might have have been run over by a beer delivery truck…

Life, eh? How’s your week going?

sprained foot, stupid accidents

This sounds like the title of one of alejna’s pants posts but it turns out I do have perilous pants. And a sprained foot. Of course if it hadn’t been raining and I hadn’t been seriously squiffy my pants might not have got the better of me…

Yesterday I went out at lunchtime to meet my friends Annie and Eduardo for the first installment of a Tapeo Extremo (a term coined by Annie on our first mega tapas crawl together just over two years ago) and I wore a new pair of linen trousers. One thing led to another and when I was finally walking home around 1 am I suddenly found myself flat on my back on the wet pavement. I thought I’d slipped on the slick surface until I got home and discovered that the one of the trouser hems had partially come down. So this has to be one of the stupidest accidents ever – tripping on my own pants!

What’s the stupidest accident you’ve ever had?
